How much could I expect to spend to get my orginal 1980 LUV engine rebuilt?

Way more than it is worth...lol

But seriously...even if you do most of the work yourself, you are looking at spending about $450 (or more) just for parts, gaskets, machine work, etc.

If you are wanting a better engine with more power, you might think about getting your hands on a 1.9 G200Z from a 84-87 Impulse.

They bolt right in and are a factory high performance engine.

You can find a decent used one that is still in good condition cheap by checking here:

In all seriousness we put more into our LUV's then they are worth (I don't save or tally up receipts cause I don't want to make myself cry). Taz is close to the price and Rondog has had a couple rebuilt with him just installing the long block himself, lets see if he chimes in with a price. Remember it is not what the truck is worth dollar wise it is what it is worth to you.

Here I am. I had to work today.
I paid the shop about $1000 for each of my rebuilt long blocks. I did the R&R, he did all the rest.
I've had places like Pep Boys and Auto Zone tell me about $1500 for long block exchanges.

Anyone used the shop that has the rebuilt longblocks for $655 on ebay in the LUV section? Just a thought.

My dad and I rebuilt my g180 and it ended up costing about 1200-1300, because we bought more than we needed, and we painted the engine, the air cleaner, under the hood and bought 3 coils (because we thought all of them were wrong, well my dad did anyway. haha) bought a new distributor, points, timing chain set, gaskets, had the head planed, it was warped, had block magna fluxed, new freeze plugs installed, and cylinders honed, we bought other stuff too, but i can't think of what they are right now.

only thing we really didn't do on it was get new pistons, but did get new bearings, we didn't get a new clutch, was already new pretty much, and didn't change the valve gasket things (bad idea, but we thought they looked new, and found out they weren't after it was completely done).

Also made the mistake of not rebuilding carb, it gets stuck when u press on the gas, and rpms stick at about 1300, unless u tap the gas and then it gets unstuck and goes back down, if he didn't move to indiana we could of rebuilt it and that would have cost about another 100!!

Not very cheap, but its totally worth it because i love my luv. :-)

I have decided to go the 1.9 route. I have found one at a local junkyard for 250. And the greeeat part about it is that it runs. So it will save me some work in the long run. I am going to pick it up tomorrow. My only concern is putting it in, (I'm not to mechanically inclined.) So I might get someone else to put it in. Unless you all don't think that it would be to difficult, and possibley give me some tips or maybe even step by step instructions.

I read this thread yesterday... Started looking into parts.

I don't think it's such a bad idea to rebuild one of these motors. The parts for them are DIRT friggin cheap!

Pistons for $56, head gasket for $15, etc.....

I just rebuilt a G180 which cost me $600 for the work on the block, the crank, and the rods. There were a couple other parts which were cleaned. I had the oil pan, the top cover, and the front cover cleaned. The block was hot-tanked, bored to .030" oversize, resurfaced, magnafluxed, and line bored. The crank was ground to match the line bore with a .0015" clearance. The new pistons were heat-pressed onto the rods which were also ground to fit the crank with a .002" clearance. I checked this with plastigage, so I know they were all exact. New brass freeze plugs were installed. I installed new chrome rings which were about $70. The pistons were $125. A new head gasket was $18. The head was magnafluxed, pressure-tested, resurfaced, valves ground, and new stem seals installed for about $190. I replaced the exhaust manifold, which was cracked when I got the LUV. This cost me $75. A carb rebuild only cost me under $40, cuz I had a friend do it for me. I only had to pay for the kit and the cleaner. I had to get a new coil, and subsequently followed that with new wires, new points, condenser, rotor, and cap. I forgot how much all that was. I have all the receipts, I just haven't added it all up. I took a lot of photos and have them posted here in the forum. If you're not careful, you'll make mistakes that can cost you time and money, so be prepared.

I welcome any questions you may have. I recommend you get the Chevy manual for the Series 10 LUV, which is for your 1980. I don't see any on eBay today, but they come on from time to time.
