Hey, I have a question for you guys. I have a '79 with a hitachi carb. Sometimes the truck will just die when I stop at a stop light. It fires right back up and usually idles fine after that. Sometimes it fires right back up but dies instantly unless I pump the gas. It seems electrical to me because it doesnt sputter or miss before it dies it just dies. Also sometimes it idles at 800 and sometimes it idles at 450 or so. Any help would be appreciated. I plan to replace the carb in the next couple weeks with a weber, but I would like to get this figured out.

There is an idle solenoid/fuel shutoff solenoid that needs power whenever the key is on. For some reason on mine I think the power does not always stay on. So what I did is ran a jumper wire from the windshield washer wire to the solenoid plug. Use a test light and figure out wich wire is hot when the key is on only and hook it up.

Could I get a photo of this valve? I think mine is disconnected too, the truck wants to diesel a bit at shut off, and I think this is why.

on that carb you got an electric choke, a coaster rich solenoid, and a fuel shutoff solenoid. I doubt those are at fault.

Mine had an ocaisonal dieseling issue, I was playing with the carb one day and figured out what I guess is the fast idle compensator(for A/C?) would prevent the throttle linkage from returning to it's bottom or original position after throttling up and releasing the accelerator, leaving the engine idling @ about 1900 rpm's. Short of removing the thing all together, I realized that, right before I shut the engine off I could "jab" the accelerator pedal just a bit as it was idling fast and watch the tach, rpm's dropped back to 900-1000, then I could shutdown without dieseling. was glad to figure this out as it also seemed to be the cause of the truck burning up 3 sets of points in 2 weeks time. Plus, no more funny looks from passersby in the parking lot :)
