It is on the crossmember in front of your gas tank, sounds like your auto teacher needs to go back to school and learn about older non fuel injected vehicles.

Does it matter what kind of pump it is or can it just be any electric fuel pump

Depends on your setup. Different carbs require different PSI, so if you get a non-stock fuel pump you'll have to get a regulator to reduce the PSI to the proper level unless it is already rated for the application you need. For example, the Webers need on or under 4 PSI if I remember right and the Hitachis need around 7 (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone). The stock pump puts out enough PSI for the Hitachi but I've have to add a Holley 4 PSI regulator (I've heard some people just adding additional fuel filters) to keep the carb from flooding out.

When my original went bad, I bought the first of several replacements at Parts America. Finally after about 4-5 of them, they didn't have more junk in stock and the kid offered me a generic one. I grabbed it and ran. Maybe been 10+ years and it is still doing fine. My 77 has a return line keeping the pressure very low. The float valve should cope with different pressures.
