Hi jack,
You stated You probably won't be able to find a diesel transmission. Fortunately, you don't have to. If your bell housing is still good, you can use a gas transmission (swap out the bell housing). Jack, tranny and bell housing are all one peice. Has someone put another tranny in it?..........Norm
Norm,
"Bell housing" isn't quite accurate (I know, I'm the one who used that term). The bell is integrated into the entire front half of the case. There's a center plate that holds both shafts and all the gears. The front and rear halves of the case can be removed without any parts falling out. Your diesel front-half (assuming it's 5-speed) will bolt right up to the center section of the gas (2.3) 5-speed transmission. Finding a slip yoke is harder than finding a transmission.
The front case houses the input bearing. This input bearing often goes out in a big way. If not fixed promptly, it can damage the housing itself. Then you can't re-use the front case.
Jack
