My 82 diesel Luv (only 97K miles) smokes like crazy (lots of blue and a little black smoke) on cold starts. It is VERY hard to start but after long attemps I get it going and it blows billows of smoke. It runs rough until I drive it a bit and then runs fine.

Two questions:

1 - Any ideas on what it could be?
2 - My guess is valve stem seals. How can I change them out without taking off the head?

Thanks!

I don't think that the vavle seals would be the problem. unless the engine was run hot at some time.( i mean really hot) sounds like to me that it is posible that your injectors could be dirty. with this ultra low sulfer fuel this stuff is very dry, no lubricant in the fuel. i have been putting some 2-stoke oil in with fuel. i would 1st get the injectors checked. then look a little deeper........

My 82 suffered the same condition. I was told it may be due to a bad glow plug or two. I swapped all of them out and it cured the problem.

I still use the block heater when the temps fall below freezing through.

Definitely sounds like bad glow plugs. Replace them and it will probably run just fine.

And perhaps before changing the glow plugs, make sure the controller is telling the glow plugs to lite up. I changed my glow plugs when I had similiar issues and it still didn't help. Then learned how the controller worked and found out that the water temperature sensor was bad and was telling the controller that the engine was already warm and to skip liting the glow plugs. Luckily this is something easy to test. Just disconnect the single wired sensor on the water neck on the front of the engine.

It was evident when the glow plugs started working because they get so hot soo quick that the old oil around the engine started to smoke within seconds.

Good luck,
Eric Q.
