Ive been gettin into watching some of the tuner/import shows on tv and lookin at some co-workers magazines to try to relate and understand this deal again. Just when I think I get it, I realize that I dont. When I hear about a guy thats got $25000 into a car with all kinds of performance stuff and hes braging about it being fast and it runs low 15s, what the f***! I give up and then keep trying again to understand it, and I just dont. Fuel injection, gas milage, I know about that. But I will fill my tank twice a week to have an actual fast street car/truck.

Amen to that! We have a Chevy Corsica with the 2.0 four cylinder, and it's nice for fuel economy and such, but for sheer fun there's nothing like American V-8 power!

yeah i dont realy get the import tuner thing either. Some of the stuff they do is cool and you have to admit that some of the guys making street legal 11second econ boxes is perty neat. But im just too happy whith my slow beat up pickups to realy care

I don't get it either. If I dumped 20,000 grand into my truck trying to make it faster. I sure as hell would be doing better than a 15 sec 1/4mi!
One of my buddies is kinda fearful of racing against any ricers... Im like, most of these guys around here just have a wing and a fart pipe, that don't make it fast. Besides, there's no sub for c.i.'s

i dunno, my old toyota pickup could take almost any ricer. if i would have dropped a grand into that motor and put a limited slip in the axle, it would have really flew. really lightweight + a lot of torque was a good combination

cram a turbo in it and the right internals and it could probably take a lot of the less modified muscle cars out there. no way i'd have to put 20k into it though, that's insane

i have about $700 inbto my f-150's motor and i can take ricers off the line, evertime whith out fail. I know i will loose once i hit 3rd though so i never race past 45mph(that and by that time i have proved my point. past that its too dangerous to me). If i could make my fords 300-6 rev higher and faster i could probly get em in the top end too (but that would take rods, rod bolts, and a lighter fly wheel, i need the heavy fly wheel for mud racing). D's got it right, there is no replacement for displacement 8)

A Hot Rod has a V8 everything else is just transportation. I am just a old school guy. There is nothing wrong with making what you have as nice as possible but in the back of my mind I would be planning a engine swap. Some of the things people think are fast just give me a good laugh.

But keep in mind I can always come back with do you want to run a Isuzu pick up?

It was a sad day for me when my son sold his S-10 (it looked real good and we could always put a V8 in it latter) and bought a Honda Prelude!!!!

Well Rat that is actually how I got my LUV  The guy I bought it from had gotten it for his son and they were gonna make it a father-son project then his son said he didnt want the truck..... well he said that he had his son out in the garage everyday after that and MADE him work on the truck just for spite!! Then he said once he got tired of screwing with it that was when he put the For sale sign on it , and I bought it like a month later. I couldnt figure out why it sat there so long???? guess noone wanted a slammed purple LUV  Oh well just my two pennies
Later

My son shows no interest in my truck. That's part of the reason I had thought of just selling out. I still think about selling sometimes, however I try and drive it at keast once every couple of months. I drove it around 1 day so far this year. If my dad had something like that I would have bought the gas to get him to ride me around in it.

I know a few straight sixes that can kick some serious butt.

A hot rod is a vehicle that has been modified to perform better than stock. What difference does it make which wheels spin or how many cylinders it has? Are all the old-school 4 bangers built back in the hey day of hot rodding uncool? Nope. Modern "ricers" are the exact same types that used to jack up the rear of their old Malibu , throw 20 stickers in the rear quarter windows, a glasspack, some slotted mags, then think they were cool. Same thing, modern cars nowadays.

What about a LUV running a hopped up 4 cyl? Is that not a hot rod? I don't like FWD turbo'd econo boxes. They aren't my cup o' tea. But when you're looking at their tail lights the next time you go up against one, tell yourself that wasn't a hot rod.

You put up a good argument. I ll go along with the idea that cylinders dont matter. I had a 72 chevy truck with a worked over 6 and it held its own. I showed it also and won on a couple ocassions.

Hell ya, one damn good argument. I agree with the "cylinders don't matter" idea, because i think we have all seen the tail lights of one of them Import cars once or twice. And your right, back in the 60's and 70's muscle car guys would slap some mags and a few stickers and some minor engine upgrades and they all thought they had something. Which they did. Their own vehicle which they personalized. I give credit to all people who invest money into making there ride faster or better looking. (More repect to the faster guys though  ) The thing is everybody has there own opinion on what is cool and whats not. Personally i don't support the import scene, not this cats style, but if it makes them happy then so be it. Gives us V8 guys somebody to beat in a race. Hell we can't all be driving around V8 vehicles, that would get kind of boring....

i can't see spending al lthat money on a import. my s10 had a 4.3 v6 with a posi and a k&n and a hypertech programmer. i didn't race much, but i was never beaten. since i'm in college, seems like a see and hear them everywhere in the parking lot. one day i heard one racing his engine up, sounded like a pissed off weedeater. so i reved mine(6.0 true dualed out with glass packs and chrome tips) (one of the loudest things on the road here) it was so funny, you couldn't here his car, only my truck. if i had a honda, i think i'd pull the 4 banger out and put in a 350. that would be somethin, first honda with a 350. it would be funny to leave it front wheel drive. probably no possible way to make it fit.
by the way my luv does have a 4cyl. and i have hoped it up a little, but i would never spend more on it than i go do a engine swap for. main reason i hopped it up was for 4 wheelin. the little 4 cylinder is lightweight and perfect for the trails.
