I have always been a window shopper meaning: I look at the web but never join in. The reason this has changed today, my dad is 65 and I love him so much he moved from Ohio to N.Carolina to stay with me in January 09. Well he was getting bored so I got him a 1981 Chevy Luv truck for $150 and he feel in love. So much to do, I really didn't know what I was getting my self into. So I was getting so ill trying to find information to assist him in bringing THE LUV TRUCK(thats what he calls it) back to life, and i stumbled on this site looking for information on ignition systems. I really have enjoyed reading and thought why not. So hello

Taboo

Wow I have never felt so invited. So I will let you all know my troubles today, I got the distributor right finally!! leave it to a newbie like me to not know I was suppose to take a matchbook and get the magnet on the pickup adjusted right. Then saw the carburator leaking got that adjusted. The biggest problem of the day: Dad was putting water in the radiator and its flowing out onto the ground. I got under the truck and the water leaking in between the oil pan and the transmission, I cant see or feel where it coming from. If anyone has any ideas let me know.

freeze plugs on the back of the block. Tranny has to be removed to access them.

Well, on the 72-80 trucks, a couple heater hoses run across the back of the eng. at about valve cover level. I don't know about the 81-82 models, but maybe.... Oh, and welcome! Very cool you and your dad can spend time together. Mine lives 500 miles away from me and I hate not seeing him much.

ok i know what freeze plug is. even though my hands are small i can't see. I told him if I got to take the motor out then we are just start from scratch and get it right. I'm actually thinking this truck is going to give me something to take care of when he is gone.

The heater hoses on my 81 run across the back of the engine behind the valve cover and firewall as well. The bad thing is they are molded hoses and they are no longer manufactured...at least that's what NAPA and Oriely's tells me. The bypass hose also hooks up to one of the heater hoses and could be the culprit as well. You can remove the right front tire, then remove the plastic clips (pinch the ends together under the hood with a pair of pliars and give a little push and they come right out) that hold a rubber "dust cover" of sorts off the fender well and you will be able to see if it is a leaking hose or coming from between the engine and transmission.

For the '81 and later LUVs (AKA Isuzu P'ups), there's a gentleman on the IsuzuPup.com site who can still get molded hoses from Isuzu. In fact, he "stocks" most of them in his garage/warehouse/workshop. He's a retired Isuzu guy.
