Well, I am starting to work on converting my 82 4x4 Luv to veggie oil using the Elsbett kit.

My question is about my car. I've got an 83 diesel Isuzu I-mark. I changed the timing belt recently and about a month after that my car starting idling really high. Once the car warms up it idles around 2000rpm. The fast idle cable isn't pulled open and the lever on the injection pump is pressed up against the idle set screw. What else can it be?

Update: The hard starts are only the first start of the day. If I start the car once, it starts up fine for the rest of the day. It even starts fine cold as long as I've started it once before the same day. It almost seems like something settles somewhere in teh fuel system, then gels forming a plug that has to get puched out. Any clues?

I see you did not get any replies on this one. What type of fuel pump does the engine have? Is it a inline or rotor pump?
Have you already solved the problem?

How are you heating your fuel? Tank? Do you run hot water around your fuel lines. Fuel filter heated, or line before the Injection Pump.? Where are you getting your Veggie oil? I would assume you are using used fry oil?

Are you settling, cleaning, filtering and dewatering your fuel yourself?

You may have some water in your fuel and it freezes or it is too thick till you get it warmed up. Are you running straight veggie only, starting on Diesel first, then switching over to veggie. Mixing some diesel with your veggie fuel?

Sorry about so many questions, but the more we know, the more we can help. I think the Elsbett kit is Veggie only. I like Frybirds best.

I don't think the timing belt had anything to do with if it ran fine for a month. You may have some galling in your pump that won't let the plunger move all the way down to the stop-end of the cylinder . Bosch IP do this but it is not well known. This could make your engine idle fast.

There should be a spec on the volume of fuel that the pump puts out. It could be a injector too. You would have to see how much each injector puts out in a specific time. You will need to use aa marked beeker.

Richard.

Before you jump into all this, give us the info I have asked for....
Good luck

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

Well I realized the hard starts were the glow plugs. I thought that I'd checked them and when I couldn't think of anything else I re-checked and found that three glow plugs were fried and the fourth was close. It was hard to find replacements for the Elsbett veggie oil kit glow plugs but I managed to have a friend in the UK send me some.

As for the idle, I turned down the idle screw and it seems to have solved the problem. Anyone know any reason why I shouldn't have done that?

Last - the fuel is heated electrically before I start and as the car warms up then it switched to a coolant heated heat-exchange system for heating the fuel. This makes it possible to use one tank with 100% used (filtered) veggie oil instead of two. The car is running well for the moment. Thanks!

The only problem I can see with that is, what happens when your entire tank coagulates? Are you electrically heating the fuel tank, or just the lines & filter?
