I've got some more bad news about my lovely luv.

It's been about 500 miles since our engine rebuild, so I need to change the oil and stuff, new fluids, etc... But since the day it's been finished i've had a problem with it that is wasting gas and making me mad.

It takes a long time to warm up, and while it warms up, it cuts out, misses, and sputters unless i rev it at about 2k rpm's for like 5 mins, then it stops and runs perfect. But while doing that, it usually wastes the 5 or 10 dollars in gas that I have in it (a half tank or more) to about 1/4 tank.

Do you guys have any idea why it warms up like that? I mean why it sounds so deathful and about to blow up, it scares me, considering my head gasket blew and we ended up spending 1600 on rebuilding the engine instead of the 30 for a new head gasket.

any kind of tips or help would be great. thanks guys

(edit) also, could my fuel lines possibly be bad or something? because my truck gets good mileage every once and a while, and sometimes its just horrible, eats my gas in about 5 mins. but then again its probably the warming up part

Sounds to me like the carburetor, is it the stock Hitachi? I would guess that the float is sticking, those carbs are easy to rebuild, get your camera and take pictures before you start, and get a pen and paper and draw what you remove and in order, Like the jets, some have a spring or a ball bearing etc, find a kit if you can on ebay, if not they run from 20.00 to 35.00, get a can of carb cleaner and let it soak. If you can look at the float thru the glass and see if there are alot of bubbles, if the carb was upside down or jarred around I bet the float is stuck. let me know if you need help, I have alot of hitachi pics to post for you.

yeah its a hitachi carb,

and that is the problem then. haha

the carb was sitting in a bucket we put it in during the rebuild and it got moved and tipped over a few times, and i think it was sideways, the glass pointing down.

i dont think theres any bubbles though, ill go take some pics when i get home tonight.

thanks guys, this could be the solution to my problem. :-)

mannn i wish mine was that good lookin

haha

i have another carb in case i need to replace this one for some reason, its off the old engine that was in this before i bought the truck.

its sick though. really nasty and disgusting. haha

anyway, if i look at the float through the glass, and its bubbly? then its bad? or stuck or w/e?

what if there are no bubbles in it. does that mean its something else wrong or what.

thanks guys.

Bubbles might mean the filter is needing a change or it's sucking in air, nothing bad just change the filter. I'm sure if you took off the cover 3 screws and carfully removed the float and cleaned the rod that the float sets on check the float, there is a brass tube that is like a spacer for the float, after that put it back together, you might need a gasket for the bowel, it looks like a thick rubber band, you'll see how it goes back on.
the carb might load up when starting because the bowel was empty.

just did a complete oil change, and put on a new filter.

and wow

it fixed the warming up problem.

soo, what me and my friend were thinking, was that the oil that was in there, must have been the wrong wt, it was 20-50, and we were thinking it was like sludge in the bottom of my oil pan, and the reason it was taking so long to warm up and sputtering like crazy was because the oil was wayyy too thick, and couldn't get anywhere. and the reason it ran better when warm was because the oil was thinner, and more movable.

and the new oil is 10-30, and right when she fired up there was no sputtering. i was surprised cuz i told my friend "now dont freak out dude, it sounds like my truck is gonna blow up or something but it wont, just needs to warm up"

and it didn't sputter one bit.

i told my dad about the oil being like sludge but he said it had nothing to do with why it warmed up with that.

would that be the reason? cuz the oil was too thick for it.

thanks guys.

If the oil was really bad then it may affect how the engine ran but it wouldnt go away after warming it up. and wouldnt have been that noticeable.

did you do anything to the carb while changing the oil?
something had to have been adjusted

maybe it was cupid......
he is the luv doctor you know.

hahaha yeah must have been cupid.

but then the devil must have come, the one who hates luv's.

because its warming up crappy again.

it must have been just cuz it was warm outside yesterday, and this morning its all rainy and sickkk

Sounds like a loose connection then. Changing the oil you must have bumped it.

If it only does it on real cold days and not on warm ones, then I suggest you take a look at your choke to see if it either isn't working or the linkage is stuck open.

A carbed vehicle with no functioning choke or one that is stuck constantly open will sure run like crap when you first start it on a cold day.

the choke DOES get stuck.

and its really annoying.

if you move the throttle by hand it'll get stuck all the way open and you either have to tap the gas quick or yank on the throttle to make it close again.

that could be the problem? how do you make the damn thing not get stuck anymore.

and i disconnected a vaccum tube while changing the oil by accident but put it back on.

and its running almost exactly the same as it was before the oil change.

sooo i dunno. haha
