What would be the correct way of setting timing with a points type distributor with vacuume advance? Do I need to disconect the vac line and plug it or leave it on? Sorry to sound so stupid I just want to get it right the first time.

The Hei I had with the mechanical advance I was using in the old motor will not clear the intake manifold. One of my friends gave me the one I am using now and it has vac adv. I dont really know what I am going to do with the truck right now. I am kind of sick of running into another problem every time I look at the truck and with the Kool April nights car show coming up before too long I think I am going to get it back together enough to drive it around with a FOR SALE sign on it.

Leave the vac. adv. un plugged 30-32 degrees dwell with 34-38 total.I would then try a little more if the motor likes it but this is the start you need.Your initial should be in the 12-16 with this set up but pay more attention to the total timing then work on you adv.curve.

Heres another stupid question If I unplug the vac adv should I get a different reading from having it hooked up? I played around with it the other day and I couldnt get it running good enough to start it get out and run around to the timing light before it died it happened so many times the battery died. Hope fully someone will buy my truck and it will be out of my hair by the end of this week. Im so frusterated with my truck every time I get it running good something that the previous owner did goes terribly wrong.
