I just built a dodge 440 and would like some opinions. The motor is out of a 1974 motorhome. It has a lunati voodoo camshaft 518 lift 238 duration @.050 lift if i remember correctly. It has a weiand team G single plain intake and am planning on running a dominator. It also has edelbrock performer rpm heads and roller rockers. here is my concern. This engine is probably at best 8:1 compression ratio. Do you enthusiasts think it will run strong in a duster properly geared. I heard that the low compression could throw my combination off.

78 luv

69 mustang
73 duster

The carb and intake sound too big for the combo. The compression ain't helping either. Since you have the edelbrock heads, see how the cam for performer package for the 440 compares to the lunati. If it were me, I'd go with a cam similar to the combo as well as the intake, a smaller carb as well if I stayed at that compression. If I was going to keep the intake and carb, I'd change the pistons and the cam as well. If it's a street combo on pump gas, the intake and carb in my opinion is still going to be a compromise. Just my .02.

I agree about the intake, however i got it for $30 at the track. I was planning on running the 750 cfm dominator which I recently found out Holley makes. I was also planning on runnin bout a 3000 stall. My camshaft has a higher lift than the performer rpm, but the performer rpm has more duration. They are somewhat similar, but a little difference can be a lot. FYA shooting for 11s in the quarter.

intake sounds okay but you're looking at a 750 CFM 4150 carb for that setup. a 4500 is meant to be WOT most of the time. dont put a dominator on it just for the sake of sayin you have one. you will be much happier with a regular double pumper or even a nicely worked vaccum secondary carb. converter sounds good but i would go 3500 IMO. but thats just me, I like to go one step further than my common sense tells me. lol.

It will be mostly drag raced. The intake has a dominater flange.

street or strip that motor needs a 4150. bigger is not always better, its alll about the right combo and a 4500 is going to hurt more than help. get an adapter to put a 4150 on it or swap out the intake for a Victor Jr, Performer RPM or Holley Contender 300-36 and you will be much happier. Thats just my opinion...it sounds like you already have your mind made up to run the 4500 so good luck with it

Here is my 2cents the cam should work ok as the 440s like allot of lift the comp will hurt a little bit the trade off as you are not going to be hammering out the bearings. The intake is the compromise in the package and when it comes to building on the cheap deal with what you have.It will work with the converter that you want (may not be perfect but works)Now as for the 750 dominator run it as it will work on that size of motor. We put one on a friend of mines 427 Chev and it worked "damn" good and this was a street car(57 Chev) The rest of the guys have good advise but run what you have and enjoy it and besides i like being different from the rest. What most people for get is you are bracket racing and getting the last bit of HP out of your motor is not part of the program, it is constancy that wins not the guy with the most power. So RUN it and have fun.

get an adapter

what cc are the heads,88 or 84?

a smaller chamber will bump up the compression a bit,a cam with about 10 less degrees at .050 will help too

Sounds like you need to buy pistons , an intake and a carb .
