does anyone have a list of what Isuzu engines will bolt into a Luv? And what Vehicle they come out of.

I know
1.8L G180
1.9L G200 Impulse

I think there are more

The 2.3 and the will 2.6, plus the 2.3 carb intake will fit on the newer 2.6's and they both bolt right up to a 5 speed.

I believe the 2.6 is around 125 h/p, only the 1.8 or 2.0 will bolt up to a stock Luv 4x4 transfer case with out any trouble, whatever will bolt up to a 5 speed in a 2wd Luv should bolt up to a 4 speed (but why would you) as long as the clutch hook-up matches, and no I don't think you need to worry about computerizing your truck.

All of the 1.8's and 2.0's are basically the same block and can use the same intake, and the older 2.3's had a carb intake that fits on the newer 2.6's.

As far as ignition goes, the same distributor and electronic ignition can be used in the 1.8 or 2.0, and I believe you can use the older 2.3 distributor and electronic ignition stuff in the 2.6 too, but I'm not positive.

The engine's in the Impulses are built from the factory, and are the best to go hunt for if you want a beefier, higher horsepower engine that you don't have to build yourself.

So I guess if you were looking for the cheapest and easiest combination for a 2wd truck, it would be the 2.3 out of an Impulse with an earlier 2.3 carb intake, the earlier 2.3 non-computerized electronic ignition and distributor, and a 5 speed. Then I guess all you would need to do is add a weber, throw on a header, and you'd be all set.

Of course you could add a turbo or nitrous to any of these, if you really seriously felt the need for speed. But since the h/p is rated for an engine w/all of the smog crap on, w/power steering, and running factory air conditioning mooching off of the engine, I reckon without all of that junk and with the addition of a weber and a header, you should be happy with it and still get decent gas mileage.

But what do I know?

Hell...I just read Playboy for the articles....lol

Thanks Taz. I knew I cold get all that valuable information out of your head. Do you know anyone that has done a 2.3 or 2.6?

HP rating on the 2.6L FI is 120, Impulse FI 2.3 is 110(Pup/Amigo FI should be similar, slightly lower perhaps), carb 2.3 is 95. The cam from the Imp 2.3 should push a carb motor up to 100ish, same cam is also used in all 2.6s from 92 on up I believe. All of the G series and 4Zx1 series motors have the same bolt pattern on the back of the motor, so it is just a matter of swapping the trans mounting plate to mount your trans of choice. 4x4 5spd is longer than the 4spd, so driveshaft work will be involved.

No one has put a 2.6 LUV together yet, but it is in the works. The only one I know of is a full frame swap from a Trooper with a 2.6L in it, but that is sort of cheating. :P For the best result, I'd pick up a complete 86 for parts, that way you have everything you need, plus 4.56 diffs and power steering parts. Then get a 2.6 long block and put it all together. I've got the Trooper and once I find a good 2.6L donor I'll be set. If you want to full recipe search for 2.6L in my older posts, but taz has most of it pretty well covered.

If you want to sort out the wiring and get the fuel injection you could do it, but I figured that is just too much work for too little gain for me. I'd rather have a dead simple install with a Weber on top.

The one I'm not sure of on your list is the 4xf1 1.8L, I thought all those cars were front wheel drive. That means mounts and tranny connection would be an issue.

okay i have a question!

can i put a 2.3 in front of a stock 77 luv tranny?

you can put the 2.3's 5 speed behind a g180 (with 4x4 flywheel) and the g200. so it should work the other way right??

That should work just fine as far as bolts lining up. The rear plate that came off my Impulse 2.3L (and Trooper 2.3L BTW) is an exact match for one off a LUV. It should bolt right up. The problem there will be finding the mix of clutch parts to use to get the larger 2.3L clutch to work with the hyrdo clutch 4spd. I'd guess you'd use the disc, pressure plate, and pilot bearing from the 2.3L and the throwout bearing from the LUV but I don't know if the spacing on the throwout would be right or within the adjustment of the slave cylinder. It should be, but you never know till you try.
