Does anyone know of a source for new head bolts for the Luv? I'm replacing the head gasket on mine and the number one bolt broke off during removal. Fortunately it didn't break off flush with the deck, there's about a half-inch sticking out. Thanks for any info.

Thanks, but I didn't see the 1.8 on that site. Is there another engine there that has the same bolts?

When I needed one head bolt, (the hex fitting was stripped out), I called Chevrolet, who linked me to a dealer that had one. I paid $6 for one bolt, and $6 more for it to be shipped. It came the next day. I have some extra bolts I might part with. How many do you need?

Amen on the shifterboot... reminds me, there is a place here in town that does casting, plastics etc. Will call em and see if they'd be interested in trying to cast a one. Would prolly need a volunteer'd non split boot.

I just need one, and a way to get the broken one out. It's been soaked in penetrating oil for a week and still won't budge. I've thought about progressively drilling it to the ID of the hole threads and then trying to run a tap into it but I'm not sure how straight I can drill it.

Did you try a large pair of vise grips?

Drill just the head of it off with a bit the same size or just a smidge bigger than the bolt shaft. Then you pull the head off over the headless shaft. Once you have it in the open and with no tension on it, it should come off with a combo of penetrating oil, heat, or some raps with hammer. I had one that resisted a tbar with two of us and pipes on eithter end before the hex head stripped out. Once the head was clear, a couple of hits with a hammer on the side and it spun out with vice grips.

Bets on it being the middle one on the exhaust side that goes down between the 2 and 3 exhaust ports? That is always the one.

You are absolutely correct 800xl, middle one, exhaust side. I've tried the vise-grips but I hadn't thought of tapping the side with a hammer. Funny thing, I was just talking to a kid at work about how to get a broken bolt out of his engine then I got home and looked at mine and drew a blank. I guess thats the difference between your own and someone elses. Thanks.

I've had several LUVs and a couple of newer Isuzu 4 cylinder motors apart, and that same bolt is always stuck like it was welded in. It goes through into the water jacket on the bottom, and I think the heat from those exhaust ports sandwiched on either side just bake it in there.

The hardest part of mine was getting the head out of the way. It took a big 1/2" drive drill, cutting oil, and some time to get through the top of the bolt. I was also dealing with rags and magnets to catch as much of the shavings as I could.

Give it some taps from all sides, even a couple on the end. That should help it break loose. Then clamp the vice grips on as tight as you can get them and start tapping on them out toward the end away from the bolt. If you can shock it enough the grip of years of heat/rust should give way. The last resort I was expecting to need to use was the good old hot wrench. I figured to heat that bolt up to red hot as close to the block as I could get, then let it cool down and try turning it again. If you can get the whole works hot enough it will break down the joint between the parts, but on an engine block that can be tough.

You could also cover everything really well and weld a nut on the left over bolt stem too. Find one that is just big enough to almost fit over the bolt shaft and then you'd have a solid place to use a socket and perhaps an impact wrench on.

Hi all. Its been a while. I did eventually get the broken bolt out of the engine. I tracked down new headbolts, thanks to a search of this site, but have not purchased them yet. The Luv has been in pieces for almost a year now. I think I'm about ready to start putting it back together, if I can find all the parts and remember how. I just wanted to thank everyone here for the help and advice that has been given. Hopefully the old Luv will be on the street again soon.

Ken

I think I kept my head bolts... you want 'em?

I dont think that they are streeched. They should probably be checked, just in case.

I also have alot of different engine parts that I need to get rid of, so if you need something give me a shout and I will see if I have it.
Most of this stuff is too big to be shipping out

I had ordered some new head bolts when I got my head done. I got them from a GM dealership. They were'nt that expensive.
