Yeah..but that week I was a little bloated and retaining water.

(Got that one from my wife)

Plus the camera always adds ten pounds.

And I was wearing a real thick shirt.

Plus clearly... I'm obviously the handsome guy in that picture - not the guy with more chins than a chinese phone book...lol

It's Monday, and I have to chuckle at Taz's remarks. I have friends who are Chinese, and two of them are named Chin!! One of them owns a restaurant!! What a way to start a week. Tazman's got more jokes to tell than there are fish in the sea; so why doesn't he get on TV?

I'm going to the machine shop to take in the rocker shafts that I polished over the weekend. I have an appointment with my audiologist today first, so I'm getting into the LUV later. I should know more about when this is going to start coming together in my next post.

I went to Pacific Auto Machine today to take in my rocker shafts for cleaning. No word on when the block will be ready. I have lots to do anyway. As you see in the photo, the bell housing is wet. Has anyone of you ever replaced just the oil seal and gasket on the retainer? I'm going to look for the parts after I get finished here.

I did some cleaning on the firewall while sitting on the frame. I'm going to do some more tomorrow.

I got an oil pressure gauge with plastic hose included, but I'm replacing the hose with copper tubing. This won't be installed until I get the engine finished.

Are you sure that oil in the bell housing wasn't from the eng. ?

No, I'm not. If it was coming from the engine, wouldn't the clutch pressure plate be oily on the inside? It's not. The clutch driven plate is clean and dry. The flywheel doesn't look too good, and the pressure plate doesn't look too good, but I'm thinking of scuffing up the pressure plate with 600 grit, and maybe having the flywheel turned, although I might just replace the flywheel.

Could it have been leaking out the rear main seal?

Maybe. But your right. The clutch would probably be wet.

Just thinking aloud...

If it's leaking out the rear main, wouldn't it come out along the shaft past the seal, and then get spun off the engine-side of the flywheel all over the inside of the bell housing?

Was there a ring of heavier deposits anywhere in the bell housing that would indicate where it was flinging the oil from?

Does it smell like tranny fluid (should be gear oil rather than engine, very distinct difference)?

i HIGHLY doubt the oil in the bellhousing is from the engine.

when i pulled the old motor from the pup, it had a leaky rear seal and the inside of the bellhousing was drenched.

thats just normal leakage from the input shaft and front cover on the tranny. totally fine.

John do your self a favor and turn the flywheel and replace the clutch assy. cause if you don't you will end up with clutch chatter latter on and you will be real upset that you didn't replace it when you had the motor out.A word of caution i know you are on a tight budget but get a NEW clutch assy. or at least a new pressure plate as the remans can be nothing but problems.Point i haven't seen a good reman setup in 25 years and the new ones always fit like factory.I have been there to many times with other people trying to save a few dollars (don't we all) and had bad times but no problems with new.Just another 2cents worth.

I agree with you except the flywheel should also be replaced, since it would cost about the same to buy it new.

I'm still wondering about the leak that Farmer Joe said was "normal". I can't say for sure the rear seal was not leaking though. I didn't try smelling it Stephen.

Looks really good John. nice and clean. You did a good job. I'm sure you'll feel better about me forcing you to get that area clean, lol, after you get your clean and purty engine in place.

Well you're right sir. I do feel pretty good about not having it there left to do when I'm still waiting on my "new" block, crank, and pistons.

I'm wondering how you got in the engine compartment, John. Did your wife lower you in with the new hoist? lol

tj is on the ball once again. Price all the new parts for the clutch, and then figure how much it will worth to you to put them in now, instead of pulling the trans later and doing it all on your back. If you can, go with the new bushing or bearing in the crank. They are only a few bucks. The rebuild is looking good, and you are putting it all out there congrats.

Hi Eric Q...I used a ladder rated up to 1500 lbs. It's right behind me.

Thanks Luvstruck, TJ, Dan, Tazman, Catman, Farmer Joe, Stephen, Rondog, Litemup, RPOZ11, and Drummerforhire. I feel you guys in my corner, and it's good to have you looking over my shoulder. I should also mention BlackLuv80, who's busy courting a woman these days and doesn't have any time for us fellas. He WUZ a big help. mytmouz and Luvrv8, too. If I forgot anybody, send me an e-mail, and I'll mention you next time.

I think I will order the new clutch and flywheel as well as a new front seal for the tranny. Better now than later.

I did order the parts above. I might have the block here by Friday and the new parts I just ordered as well. The fun will begin. 8)
