I just picked up a good running, low mileage G200 engine out of an '86 Impulse for $245.00 (w/no core charge and a 60 day replacement guarantee), that has good compression, doesn't have any noise, and doesn't smoke at all, from a boneyard about 35 miles from my place.

They are a pretty big, reputable, and well-known place that has been there for years, and they check all of their engines out very carefully and store them all indoors in a heated building once they are pulled...so it should be a good strong reliable runner.

I was wondering what years and which ones are the best Impulse engines and if there is anything I need to be worried about before I tear into my truck and swap it in?

I'm assuming my G180's electronic distributor & ignition stuff, my intake & weber, my flywheel & clutch asembly, and my header will be an easy swap and will all bolt right up to it...right?

I'm sure hoping there isn't going to be too much stuff I have to switch or fuss with...because I'm really itching to get this engine in my truck and get into some serious mischief right away...lol

86 was the final year for the G200 in the imp, so if there is a best year that might be it. By that point all the bugs were worked out of the design right? (Like they didn't do that in the G180, but hey its a theory) They didn't make any noted changes to the G200 in the years it was used in the imp, so any impulse motor really should be about as good as the next.

Worst case you strip it down to block and head only, and put all your g180 parts back on it. I'd consider keeping the flywheel, it should have the larger disc clutch which would be an improvement if you don't have it already. The oil pan might or might not clear, the imp is tight under the motor in places so it might not be an issue but you'll have to check for sure. Pulling the pan to clean the sludge out of the bottom would be a good idea anyway though. I'd be willing to bet that at least some of the acces brackets will need to swap, but if you have no smog pump the alt is all you need to worry about. From the pics it looks like none of that is there so that could be a non-issue. The crank pulley might need to swap though, so eyeball that one carefully.

That is it for my braindump on the subject. Let us all know what you find once you get to working on it, but I doubt you'll find many issues.

It is basically a long block...it has no distributor, no exhaust, no flywheel, no starter, no alternator, no smog stuff, but it does have the stock complete Impulse intake still intact(which anyone here can have for free if they want it), and it is a huge relief to finally find a decent Impulse engine that I could afford.

It's also great to confirm that all of my old stuff will work...thanks a lot 800xl!

I chose to yank and leave all of that other stuff at the boneyard myself to keep the price down...and because I really don't need or want any of it laying around in the way.

I figure I'll just yank my motor, go get a bigger clutch and flywheel that fits it, put the two engines side-by-side, swap all of my stuff over, and drop it into my truck.

While I'm at it...it's going to get a complete gasket replacement, and it will get cleaned up real good inside and painted up real purdy outside.

Pretty soon...the only thing left stock on my truck is going to be the cab and the frame...lol

Sounds like your plan is similar to what I did swapping the Imp motor into my Trooper. Replace all the gaskets and seals, swap over the parts that are needed and drop it in. I did everything but the headgasket, including the valve stem seals. They required some trickery. If you get some soft cotton rope, tie a big knot in one end, feed it into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, then turn the motor over by hand under it pushes the rope up tight against the valves. You can pull the keepers and valve springs and get at the seals without the valve dropping into the cylinder that way. I forget where I picked that tip up, but it worked really slick.

The other tip I used is to get a small magnetic pickup tool for getting the spring retainer keepers out and back in. A little grease on the keepers also helps them stick in place with putting them back in.

Check here:

http://car-part.com/

I got this from Fulla Luv...but I doubt he has used it much...lol

There is no charge for buyers...(it's a lot safer than buying from some clown you don't know on ebay), it's partnered with every Auto Recycler Association in The USA and Canada, and it's been around since 1998.

Just pick the year (84-86) and the model (Isuzu Impulse) and the part (engine), pick the area(mine is Northwest - but you can use whatever is best for where you live), put in your zip code, and search...and you will find quite a few.

You can sort them all by price, by quality rating (A-C, A being the best), and they also give any info available about the vehicle, the mileage racked up on the vehicle that the part came from, the year of the vehicle it came from, the part's condition, the yard's location and how far it is from you, the yard's phone number, the price (if available), etc.

This site charges a hefty fee (around $300.00 per month) to sign up and join as a Auto Recycler business, screens their applicants carefully, won't take any yard that isn't a member of any Auto Recycler Association, and updates their part inventory several times a day...so it should find you anything you'll need for you without any problems.

Most yards listed with them will ship it to you as cheap as possible too, if it's feasible.

The guy I got my engine from is a member, and every time I had trouble finding a part, he looked it up on this system and got it for me. I found out about this site, looked up my engine, found out he had one, and went and twisted his arm real hard to get a good deal.

Then I growled at him a bit for not telling me about that site...but I can't really blame him because if I had this, he wouldn't have made as much money getting parts shipped to him for me in the past...lol

BTW 800xl...thanks a lot for the tip!

That's a pretty slick trick...and it will save me from having to pull the head on another engine I have for a different vehicle that has bad valve guides.
