Hi
I recently purchased a 78 Luv 2 wheel drive for my wife to fix up. It has a manual 4 speed in it now which does not work. Does anyone know if I can get a manual 5 speed and exchange it with the 4 speed? It has a 1.8 engine. :?: Or can anyone tell me where to get a rebuild kit for the 4 speed? 1st and reverse grind. :!:

This swap has been done lots by other members here...so you could just do a search for more info.

But to help you out...basically you need to find a 5 speed transmission out of a newer isuzu pup that will bolt up to a 1.8.

And while you are there, make sure you get the driveline with it, because the number of splines are different on the front yoke that goes into the back of the 5 speed transmission, and the back yoke that bolts to the rear differential on your stock luv driveline is a different bolt pattern than the newer isuzu pup's is.

The G180 and G200 block are all the same bolt pattern and their 4 speed and 5 speed transmission bellhousing bolt patterns are all the same, except for the trucks with a diesel engine, so it shouldn't be that hard to find.

The u-joints are all the same too, so it's a real easy swap that greatly improves your truck, and it is pretty simple, especially if you have a shortbed truck.

Then all you have to do is get the newer isuzu pup shortbed driveline, change the back yoke to your old one from your original luv driveline, and it will be a pretty cheap, quick, and easy job to convert it all over.

BTW...the rear end differential gear ratio in most stock luv's was pretty low and they aren't near as strong as the newer isuzu pup ones...so grabbing the complete rear end out of the isuzu truck that you get the transmission from and changing it all over too might not be a bad idea while you are there.

That way you could get way better gas mileage from the higher gear ratio and end up with a stronger rear end too...but I guess it all just depends on how much $$ and effort you want to invest into the truck.

Hope all this has helped you...

Taz pretty much covered the process. Just look for a an Isuzu pickup with a 5 spd and a cable clutch and you'll have the beast you need.

Just FYI for others considering this, if you have a 76-77 LUV with a hydraulic clutch the 5 spd out of an Isuzu Impulse (up to 1989) looks like a good match.

I used a 5 speed trans off of a 1990 isuzu pup in my 78 but it was originally a automatic.

I think 90-92 are all hydraulic clutches too in the pups.

The trans I used came off of 2.6 its a bigger 5 speed than the 2.3 or G200.
So if you are a person with a heavy foot like me then the 2.6 trans is the way to go.

Also the clutch linkage can be converted to a cable from hydralic and hydraulic to cable.

Same here.

I used the transmission and complete rear end out of an '86 pup longbed with a 2.6 and the complete driveline out of an 87 pup shortbed with a 2.6.

I had to swap the rear springs from my luv rear end to the pup rear end though, since the pup's are a little longer and set up on the axle housing different, because it moved the axle back a bit too far to center it properly in the rear wheel wells.

I also had to re-locate the little tab attached to the rear end housing that the rear brake line junction box bolts to.

It cost me a few bucks and took one whole weekend...but it was a huge improvement that was definitely well worth it all.
