PostPosted: Fri Apr 18, 2003 9:45 pm
I am thinking of replacing the voltage regulator and the glow plug relay for my glowplugs because the previous owner bypassed them from the battery straight to the glowplugs, and I think that this is damaging the glow plugs. Do you think this is a good idea or if not, what should I do?
Otherwise I have to use staring fluid to start the vehicle. 1981 , 2.2 l, diesel, 4 by 4.

It is a very good idea. The purpose of the relay is to cut power to the glow plugs after ignition occurs and the engine is running. Otherwise, you will burn your glowplugs up sooner or later.

When you turn on the ignition switch, the relay closes and sends power to your glowplugs. When the truck starts, the relay loses its ground and opens, killing power to the plugs. If you have it jumped across without a relay, your plugs are hot all the time.

I would just replace the plugs with what it calls for at the parts store. There is no need for a kick azz glow plug cause your engine runs on compression combustion. After it starts, your glowplugs are useless for anything other than keeping compression from leaking out of the cylinders. And no problem. I am here to help  .
