Hi all, didn;t see this question answered anywhere so i thought i'd give it a go...
In the terms of electronic ignition (350 of course) what, in YOUR opinion is the best bang for your buck? No need for dataloggers or complex drag-style electronics. I'm talkin coil, complete "dizzy" setups, points to elec ign, wires, plugs.

Hoping for some good insight, Thanks all!

I have always trusted MSD. I run them in my race cars and street cars.

well if your not pressed for space, id say got with a summit HEI distributor. hook up the power, hook up the plugs and your ready to go. this would be the best bang for the buck i would think, since theyre only like 110bux from summit.

msd stuff is also great stuff, but spendy.

An HEI with a MSD module is what i use and no problems, but a word to the wise don't go mixing ign. brands in the dist.as i have been there ie;MSD module and a Duii coil the coil lasted 1 hour get the complete set up.Another dist. is the performance Chevy one that is the same one used on the ZZ4 it has a near perfect adv.curve and the vac. adv. is superior to any stock setup.

i am actually pressed for space, i noticed mallory made some smaller diameter dizzys, but an HEI for me wouldn't work, i mean, it COULD, but i'd rather just get a smaller better one since i need one anyway. Thanks for the suggestions tho, i wonder if anyone/magazine has done product tests on different ignitions for a 350.

Obviously not MUCH can be gained from a new ign, well maybe some (anything is better than points) but it WILL help make a more complete burn in the cylinder, hence less fouled plugs and cleaner tailpipe emissions

Space limitations ok, how about a later HEI with external coil and MSD has all the parts as well as like modules, coils, caps, even complete dist. The wrecking yards are full of them and even if you find a computer controlled one you can change the module it a simple bolt in but some of these don't have a vac. adv. and some don't have a mechanical adv. these you don't want i run mine without the vac. as it is only for fuel milage any way and i haven't been able to see the difference as i setup my own timing curve anyway.

MSD has a small cap HEI that is a readt to run. No boxes or external coils.

MSD for sure. I have run MSD on everything I have had from IMCA modfieds, drag cars, and jet boats very reliable and dependable. Also if something does go wrong most of it can be rebuit by the factory.

I am not sure how they work, but what about one of those ignitions that have a coil for each plug?

That is for distributor less ignition. I would doubt he wants to go that way.

yeah, definatly want to stick with the ol' dizzy. Sounds like MSD is the way to go.

The coil on plug is a great idea, glad to see that chevy is actually getting it right for the most part. A lot of their trucks i see into the shop are at 100K-150K and still have all the original coils. Ford on the otherhand...well, lets just say that @ 100K-150K you can expect that at least half of the coils have already been replaced. AND FINDING WHAT COIL HAS GONE BAD IS A REAL !$#@$! Becuase Ford doesn't have a misfire counter, hence it doesn't know what cylinder it's misfiring on, only that there IS a misfire detected by the crank sensor.

Enoung rambling tho. So is ANY MSD product good? Can you get carried away with "overdoing" the ignition? And should I stay away from cheaper/simpler MSD setups (if there even is a thing)? Thanks for all the insight!

If you want an ignition box set up instead of a ready to run dist., A 6AL box is plenty. It depends on what type of adjustability and the need for a bigger spark.

If money is tight, use the HEI. It can be upgraded with out putting a lot of money in it. I think the make a remote coil setup for the HEI. It is very good up to certian RPM, Compression ratio and such.

I've had good luck with a pertronix conversion kit. Small dist (points) and the benifits of electronics ignition. And best of all they are cheap!
