On the other hand, if there were to be enough donations.... Get a new eng. kit from E bay or wherever, and build a "new" eng. with this 3rd block.

I'm asking around to see if there is anyone in an extended list that might be headed this way or making a round trip, but don't count on it.

It would be cheaper to rent a Uhaul pickup truck to go get it than to pay freight to get it up here if it comes to that. It should only cost like $50 tops plus a little gas to rent a pickup for a day.

Should we start a separate thread in General Discussions to trouble-shoot the issues with the minivan?
:)

Son of a gun...that really sucks John.

I am so sorry!

That engine was not leaking coolant, there was no oil in the coolant, and it wasn't having any overheating problems and was stored indoors after it was pulled...so I have no freakin' clue how the hell that crack happened.

I'm sure if my buddy thought it had any problems...he never would have bothered to save it...and he is a school trained mechanic that manages a repair shop...so he would have noticed it when he drove it over to my garage to pull it and strip the parts off that the truck he needed.

It is doubtfull that having it fall off the engine stand did that either...so I guess now we will just have to find you another one.

That truck of yours is starting to piss me off...apparently it thinks it's mission in life is to bankrupt you without even running...but that is just not going to happen.

You guys see what you can do...and see if someone can help him get his minivan running...and I'm going to wear out my phone and track down a running used engine for his truck....or die trying...because this just ain't over yet.

Thats the spirit I agree as well..I will do some research see if I can find anything as well. I think we should continue with the donations if possible. One way or another this luv will be rolling under it's own power! Heck we may have better luck finding a 1.9 out of a pup to send your way...I know it's easier to find pups (Least around here)....

on another note what all is needing to be done to the van?

The mini van needs a transmission rebuild. I was going to fix the LUV first and use it to haul my transmission to the wrecking yard to exchange for another one for $300 and avoid the additional $300 core charge. Then I found a shop to do the job for $300, so it's would be $600. I've gone around three times that much already on the LUV, and my wife and son are pretty disgusted with me. I agree with them. Tuesday morning when I was waiting for Larry to come over, I took the battery out of my LUV and put it in the minivan, which hadn't been touched in a long time, and it started right up. I was moving it out of the way for the engine's arrival from Tazman. It runs fine, the automatic transmission won't go into high gear. We stopped using it two years ago. Been walking ever since. My son Fred will be nine in April, and I want to take him fishing. I guess if I have to use a city bus we could make the local lake at least. I grew up on a 275-acre dairy farm in Monroe, WA so it's a big contrast in the way we're being raised. Well, I could talk to Larry and see if he'd consider such a long trip.

Yes I think there's a more cost effective way to get this done. Nascar44 might consider the drive as he just got back from Florida, and he loves the road. I would love to drive myself in a borrowed or rented pickup. I would go any day. Oh, I just saw the post by Ctmandu about bringing it up himself. Oh man. Roll out the red carpet and bring in the band. Fire up the barbeque pit and let's roast a pig. There's royalty on the way! I don't know what to say.

I'm gonna start trying to make some more room in the shop today. There's some great weather forecast for the next few days, so it should be a time of progress. I thank each of you for your positive inspiration and I won't deny it's keeping my hope alive.

Tazman, the engine I got from you looks real good, but the only real way to know the block leaks is to get it running, or have it checked by a machine shop. Both of these are costly, so it looks like I better hope for another solution. You are a great person, and I don't fault you for a thing.

Eric Q, I agree with you to throw it in and give it a shot, but if it leaked after all the work of installation, it would turn my wife into a tornado and I would be a dry leaf in wind. I saw a block leaking last week when I went over to Des Moines to look at a truck for parts. It isn't pretty. The engine starts to steam almost immediately, and you know that's not gonna fly. I didn't get that truck, although there were other parts on it that would be usable. I could get it for someone else if they want it, but there's no title.

Ctmandu, just checking. Is the engine block that you would bring machined and cleaned, or just cleaned? Have the cylinders been honed or rebored, and what size pistons will be needed? I will be needing new rings which will be from $35 to $75. A new head gasket will cost $20. I have an oil pan gasket. Rod bearings cost $28 for standard. I will need new manifold gaskets too. (In case Tazman, you didn't catch it earlier, you gave me the wrong head set) I will use my cylinder head that I spent about $200 on already. The cylinder head on that engine I just got has a couple things that are damaged. The reference mark on the camshaft has been gouged, and I saw at least one head bolt that is stripped, and may be difficult to remove. I surmounted this problem before using large vise grips and a 15" adjustable wrench to turn the bolt. I replaced that bolt with a new one from Chevrolet. Between the two I should have a fine set of head bolts. Then there's main bearings, and I can't find that receipt, so I have to guess they were about $60. So what I come up with without any further ado is it's going to cost at least $150-$200 just to replace the bearings and swap the parts between my engine, Tazman's engine, and Ctmandu's block with the oil and filter added. Then I need to change the oil and filter after break-in, so there's going to run another $25 depending on the oil used. That means I need at least a couple hundred dollars right away, and that's if the block is ready to go. Then there's the possibility I haven't counted everything, and more is needed so I want you all to know this is on my mind today.

Having said that, I'm sending Ctmandu my address, phone number, and maps attached to an email that should make his trip and arrival clear. I hope all the rest falls into place, and it will be posted, I assure you.

I need a lot of cash to put new parts in the block...if I have to wait on my income it will take months before I can get it all. I want to add an oil pressure gauge. I need new piston rings for $71. Thrust washer is $9.00. Rod bearings are $28. Main bearings are $60. I also need to replace the hot/cold water valve for the heater. I need a jack to put behind the seat. I am going to need a couple of oil changes, and then when it's ready to take to inspection and get the papers all taken care of it's going to be around $130. I don't know if the block will need any additional work by a machine shop. If I need to buy new pistons that will be $160.

I wouldn't be posting all these items if I wasn't asked, but then again, it's all part of the story. There's a lot of good in the world, and we do believe. I am going to have a LUV running down the road someday playing Jackson Browne's "Running on Empty" with a full tank of gas. I just don't know when.

When a block is done by a machine shop they do a lot. They want to have the crankshaft and the pistons so it can be done properly. They clean the block, clean the crank, grind the crank, polish the crank, R&R the pistons, resize the rods, bore and hone, line bore, and deck the block. I have pricing on this from $600 to $1300. I hope the block had had this work done, but it could not have the crank and pistons worked unless they're included. That I do not know yet, but what a day tomorrow is going to be.

I have been LUVing this web site for five months, and gotten good advice from lots of you, and it is my great pleasure to welcome Ctmandu and his LUV to my humble home. I need to go to town and get a roll of red carpet and bring in a marching band. That's my feeling anyway.

new pistons are $68 on ebay not $160 and rings are $31.50 on ebay not $71... so look at it this way you get a new block and i save you $131.50...so your off to a good start,oh and that included shipping

I'm hoping I don't need the new pistons, and I can use the ones from the engine I got from Tazman. I won't know until I measure and if the dimensions are standard I'll be able to just swap parts. I already put new rings in my engine, but those were the low end ones out of several choices, and I was thinking about getting the better quality rings for a fresh block. Even if the costs are minimal, it's not in the pocket, so any and all the help is certainly appreciated. Maybe when this is done I should take a sculpture class and erect statues of all the good people who have given of their time and materials. It would look like ancient Rome hereabouts. The archway would have to read, "LUV TRUCK CITY"!!!!!

Falling back on my mechanic school training, (SSCC), I recall a tool called a telescoping gage. I found it online at Starrett, the manufacturer.

http://catalog.starrett.com/catalog/cat ... Mode=PLIST

This tool (#579E) has a 2 3/8" handle and is all I need for thoroughly checking out the cylinder for diameter, out-of-round, or taper. It's $33. Since I already have the digital calipers, measuring the cylinders front to back and side to side on three different levels will give me 24 different measurements that I should be able to definitely know which piston and/or ring size to order. The guessing will be out and knowing will be in whether I can or cannot use the pistons I have already acquired.

This is for Pacific Auto Machine to see. They were in touch with me today and spent a considerable amount of time discussing this. We have concluded the block should not be used or patched. That leaves at this time a block which Ctmandu is personally bringing up from Idaho and needs some cleaning, measuring, and assembly. The costs are going to mount, and I'm wondering about it all.
