The should be close to time is where I would start. What type ignition are you running? If the timing is way off, it will spark, but it ain't gonna light.

It could be installed 180 out. Try bringing #1 back up and double checking to see. If you have a timing pointer it should be on the zero mark on the balancer when the rotor button is pointing to #1. Also, it could be that the distributor is installled one tooth off. Check cap also to be sure the part the rotor button mates with is all there. Sometimes part of it will fall off when the cap is removed.

A mistake I made years ago on my Ford 302 boat is... take off the dist. cap and crank the eng over to see if the dist. goes clock wise or counter clock wise. And make sure your wires are in the cap in the right direction.
I had all my wires on in the wrong direction. #1 would fire and then nothing.

Now that you have it running you should be able to play with the timing and carb to get it to idle.

Sounds exactly like the day I fired up my V6 for the first time. 180 off then had to get the idle down to a normal level.

well, i got it down to a 1500 or so rpm ''idle''. cant seem to get it down any more...it was a lot more than that due to a gasket interfering with the throttle. not anymore... 'big grin'

if you have an electric fuel pump you could be getting too much pressure, may need to be regulated. :?:

Try spraying some carb. cleaner around the intake to check for vac. leaks. Also if it has a PCV pull it put your hand over the hole and see if you are getting vac. in the engine this will tell you if the bottom of the manifold is leaking .Also check and make sure you secondarys are fully closed.More hints coming later

If you have a 383, you should be able to get some really good horsepower. The 305 heads should give you a good compression ratio if you run flat tops. A 4:88 or so cam, and valve train and carb, should make it run.

it has ported, polished, and shaved heads with high strength valve springs. it has a custom cam originally intended for a dirt track car. it has 486 lift/306 duration if i remember right. ''odd'' sounding cam... also has dbl roller timing chain, hei ignitiion, headers... and others ...
