Sorry for the song misquote but I really have a big problem here.

I have traded up to a 32/36 weber carb with a manual choke, I think I have the timing right. and the truck seems to run well enough but I can only make 55 on a level road and not much more. If I start going up hill I loose speed now matter how much I jam the pedal down. It's like the truck goes gutless all of sudden. I can run up to speed around 45-50 well enough and maintain them except on big hills.

What do you all think is the problem?

Thanks
Gareth

Does the throttle linkage go full open with the pedal? I had that problem with the stock Hitachi carb at one time.

most likely probrlem is the carb isnt getting wide open. Other than that i would check out the points and condensor, if they start going bad your truck will do that too...

In order of asking.

1. With the old carb 8 years ago and a engine rebuild later it would hit 70 and thats about it.

2.The linkage seems to be running all the way out at and the Butterflys open fully.

3. It is an 81 No points to my knowledge timing is set best to my abilty. I used a light gun but I could not determine the RPM like it is said in the manual. 800 RPM I think. I just guessed it by ear.

4. Fuel Filter could be an idea I changed it when I did the rebuild. and after having the gas tank cleaned. But not since then. 7 months ago.

You should always replace the fuel filter when installing a new carb.
Was the carb new or known to be good?
Might want to confirm adequete fuel delivery(pump rate & lines not blocked or kinked).
All vacuum lines capped that were eliminated with the weber?
Is the vacuum advance hooked up & functioning?

Just some thoughts

Does it have a cat underneath? When they get plugged up it will run great but with no power.
If it does have a cat, you can try going around the block with the exhaust disconnected and see what it does.
