RPO makes a very good point. im just lucky to be getting such a deal on this good bottom end.

now i wish i could get a deal at work and get some freakin days off!! lol a steady week of 10+ hour days really gets to ya!

i need to go talk to the guy at the speedshop and see how much a master kit for this will cost me. along with the intake too.

X , B , and O rods were GM good guy rods.
It has been thought that they were structurally better , and/or had a nickel add as well.
I sorta doubt that occured, but could be a fact.
It needs to be noted that metal added around the bottom ends, the big end of the rods, is where GM rods were "supposedly" better.
It is a known fact that aftermarket manufacturers executed this into their designs.
SCAT, most recently. has exposed this in their rod designs.
Not to mention many others!

Farmer, the ones in that motor I had were NOT X rods.
Can you share with us what an X rod looks like?

no, these were the rods and pistons that were in your block when he had the motor in the 78. when we put that block in the 80 we put all new stuff in it.

the guy at the scrapyard saw them and told me if i was sure that i wanted to get rid of em. he said that they had alot more material around the big end. i do remember that they all had "X" cast into the sides of em, and the ones with the motor im getting dont.

X, B, and O rods appear as such below:
Image

Now where you see an O here, B, or X will appear accordingly!
That is the only thing that makes them so-called desirable.
If i remember correctly, this is how GM issued these rods thru those years:
O-Rods were 69-72 years, X-Rods 70-74 years, and B rods were found in Truck and Car motors; 2 and 4-Bolt respectively.
B-Rods in the latter years were spread out more across 350 motors throughout the 70s.
If one was doing a really extreme restoration, MAYBE one would use these in a 302, maybe an LT1, or a ZR1/ZR2 application.
Otherwise, they really are not any different than a standard 5.7 center to center GM SBC connecting rod.
I will use the SCAT cap-screw or maybe a diffrent version better suited for more demanding build needs....

The 010 & 020 under the timing cover represent the percentage of tin and nickel in the casting, 1 or 2 percent. This is also in some 2 bolt blocks. I have one of the 2 bolts in my truck now with the 010 and 020. I agree with the usage of the blocks though. I run whatever I come across as long as its a 72 or earlier block. These are the thicker wall castings. In a street application, I'll run whatever I find. Stock castings are pretty good. I like cast cranks as long as the rpm's are under 6500 as the cost is cheaper.

mytmouz i'm just the opposite . I like the 1-pc rear seal roller blocks . I have been wanting to build a 383 , but have yet to find one with a bad crank. I run a used zz4 crank now.

Ive never heard Pink rods called Marine rods before.
Pink Rods designate the coloring swath GM used to identify the shot peening and magnufluxing and such done to the performance rods GM did.

Anyways, I will offer 1 more add to 010 blocks and stuff:

My old machinist , who has since moved-unfortunately!...
Stated that up to 1978, GM made their SBC castings, as well as BB castings thicker.
They may have started to lighten them in 77-78, but He was defiant in stating that as of 1979, all were poured with less iron and thus run hotter.
SO, if you want a block, find one prior to a 1979 date code!
His word is GOLDEN!

well, id like to thank all you guys for all your knowledge and opinions.

but, as always, i got 2x4 thrown in my spokes today.

i have to move back in with my parents due to the landlord giving the house back to his daughter. so now i have no garage.

so i doubt that the pup will get the v8 now.

The marine are the same as the pink rods as i understand but they were a marine green.I'm inclined to believe it as i tore down a marine 305 for parts (froze broke with 50 hrs on it) and it had the same rods but all i got to keep was the cam as the owner used the rest. The cam made a real good 305 though as the marine 305 was rated at 225 hp with 8.5 comp. and i put it in a 85 305 with 9.5 comp.and this was in a S10 with a 700R4 373 gears and pulled 28-30 mpg (can you say torq.)It taught me that the 305 was underrated and make a good motor for LUV's when built right. How often can you have your cake and eat it and get more :)
