I posted this at isuzupup.com but I'm posting here to get a little more views. I just bought an 82 luv and this is my first post. I'm a novice mechanic, and have no clue about anything dealing with diesels. I am willing to learn. The wires on the two sensors on the elbow above the thermostat have broken right at the sensor, so I can't splice them. I believe the sensor on the left tells the glow plugs whether they need to glow or not, am I correct? What is the sensor on the right? I went to Advance Auto and the sensors they had didn't look the same. Does anyone know if they have been redesigned? The sensor on the right looks like it might work, but it looks like instead of wires coming straight out of the sensor, the new one has a plug with wires coming out. Sorry for the long post, but I am very excited about getting this truck running.

Hi Scott:

First off I would suggest searching the diesel archives here and at isuzupup.com. Both sensors have been explained in detail regarding their purpose. In summary, the sensor with 1 wire tells the glow plugs to heat with Relay 1 (the higher voltage relay). The sensor with 2 wires tells the injector pump to do a fast idle if the engine is cold.

Now the one thing that I haven't found by going through the archives is wether or not the single wire sensor is still available through parts stores. I know from experience that my local NAPA doesn't carry it. If anyone on this board has a supplier or part number I (and Scott too) would be grateful.

With my defective sensor connected the truck was very hard to start. With it disconnected the truck starts very quickly. Essentially your sensor is currently disconnected which is causing full pre-heating every time you start the truck. The only drawback to this is that you are using the glow plugs more than needed which will most likely shorten their life.

Good luck,
Eric Q.

You might try browsing through these:

Temp sensors -

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList ... e%20Sensor

Could find a throttle position sensor.

If you have a dremel tool and a small toothed ball, it is possible to repair the 2-wire sensor. Carefully grind away at the epoxy around the two wires, until you are down a bit, less than 1/8th ". This will give you enough to solder new wires to. Be sure to secure the new wires very well, as fatigue from vibration is what broke them in the first place.
I have done this with success. Be patient, take your time. It helps to be fairly adept at soldering, but is isn't very difficult.
Of course, replacing it is a better cure, but 1) I couldn't locate parts around here, 2) I didn't have to drain the coolant at all, and 3) it didn't cost me anything to make this repair and keep the old truck on the road.

Call me cheap, but if I don't have to buy anything to fix something, and the fix is good, I'll do it.

Thanks for the replies. I think on one of the sensors I will repair it like ZacharyMac suggested. There is a link at the isuzupup site under the same topic name for part numbers for new sensors. I'd post the link but can't until I have 5 posts.
