LoL, Ha Ha Ha, exactly what I wanted to do!!!! I looked for the numbers before I took any thing off. I was happy to see them already stamped on. That must mean they're the originals, no doubt.

Oh i have no doubts that the rods are original, but normally having numbers stamped on the rods usually means that the motor has been taken apart before. The #3 rod cap looks like an 8 because someone stamped the first strike upside down. And the fact that #4 wasn't even stamped was because they could figure out that once 1 thru 3 were in, the last one only goes in the only open bore.
But all this is a dead issue. Everything will go back together in the right order with fresh rings and bearings.

#4 was stamped, but was very hard to see due to rust. I cleaned it off.

Thank you for your vote of confidence. Now we need to go tickle Nascar44 and make him believe. He's trying to be clairvoyant and tell me I need him in two months from now. I'll hold him down and you do the tickling.

I am not feeling too good today, so I'm taking a day off. It snowed here last night too, and it's cold on the concrete. Maybe I might run some 600 grit on the top of the block, that's all for today.

It's almost 2007 and I'm expecting the rings to arrive on January 2. UPS doesn't usually deliver around here until late afternoon, so it should be on the 3rd when I run the flex hone and install the pistons. I apologize for the wait and unless you want to see photos of me polishing my tools there's just not a lot happening right now. I do still need to go under the vehicle and prepare the surface for the oil pan replacement. I should take a photo or two of the crank. Catch y'all later...

OKAY!!! The new piston rings have arrived. I'm going to put them on the pistons today, and stagger them as illustrated in the manual. Here's a photo of the rings as they arrived...

Here is a video of me putting the rings on the #4 piston. I fumbled around a little! I couldn't hear the sound, so I don't know if you'll hear it either. Notice the diagram I scanned and enlarged from the book which shows the right way to position the rings. I had already done the other three pistons, so this is it until tomorrow when I install the pistons with their new rod bearings. I also will be running the dingle berry hone tomorrow morning just before the piston installation.

I put the pistons back in after I deglazed the cylinders. I also started the main bearing replacement by removing two of the main bearing caps and both bearing halves. I have photos and videos today. I hope you like them.

#1- Getting ready
#2- #1 cylinder had been deglazed already, #2 hadn't yet
#3- Swabbing some 30W in the cylinders before deglazing
#4- All in!
#5- #1 rod journal
#6- #2 rod journal
#7- #3 and #4 rod journal
#8- #5 main bearing cap and #4 rod journal
#9- #1 main bearing journal
#10- #3 and #1 main bearing caps and both bearing halves. The bottom halves are next to the caps. I thought it interesting that there showed more wear on the #3 bottom half than #1. No matter, I'm doing them all anyway. First I loosened all the caps, and only removed the two so far. I used a short piece of primary wire to push the upper half around a quarter turn, then I could move it with a shop towel.

I'm working on the videos. Give me time!

Well I declare that's the first and the last time anybody's ever accused me of not taking enough pictures!!! Ha ha ha, I'm kidding. In this experience of being a member at LUVTruck, I repeatedly miss taking photos of good stuff, no matter how hard I try. I actually forgot to take pictures of the new rings after installing them, huh! Farmer Joe, you'd best try going back to page 8. I did a couple side shots of a piston rod or two. Just for you, I'll tack on a couple more. I never did the pin removal, so I haven't any photos of a rod without a piston attached.

RPOZ11, I hope the blood does keep flowing. I mentioned to my wife that I hoped I don't fall over dead right about now cuz if I do who's gonna put the LUV back together for my boy to own someday? Rest assured this isn't a pastime brought about by choice, but necessity, and when it's all put together I'm a'hoping it'll stay together for that legendary 500,000 miles at least. Having had the timing chain tensioner adjuster break and the timing chain flopping around, (Did you see the photos I posted showing the wear on that special oil jet/bolt?) I could ill-afford to ignore this repair. I'll never deny the experience has been one of life's greatest pleasures, but it isn't something I want to do as often as pumping blood through my arteries!!!

BlackLuv, I love the local police, but not enough to want to support them by paying tickets for doing reckless stunts LIKE YOU. LOL :impact:

Here's the new main bearings. I haven't taken but #1 and #3 out so far, but it's interesting to note the different sizes of bearings here. I'm expecting the two smaller pairs of bearing halves to go on the #2 and #4 main crankshaft journals. The larger ones would then be on #1, #3. and #5. We'll find out later today if I'm right about that. The main bearing cap bolts require 72 ft/lbs of torque. They're supposed to be tightened down from the center out; #3, #4, #2, #5, and then #1. This will ensure the crank turns smoothly.

At this point in time, I have nothing holding me back from assembling everything and starting the engine again. I hope I take enough photos for all of you out there, but I want to get along with it and finish. My inspection day is Monday!!!! Think I'll make it?

#1- New bushing ready for installing
#2- Oil pump installed in front cover before replacing on engine. You can barely see the punch mark in the rear of the shaft.
#3 Removing an old bushing from the main journal...I was using a piece of weedeater line
#4- Pushing a new upper bushing in a main journal
#5- Slot lined up with notch; it went together perfect!
#6- View of todays progress (All main bearings in and caps torqued)
#7- Notice the white enamel on the timing mark
#8- Video, "A Little Spit Goes A Long Way!!"

That's strange. I thought I posted yesterdays photos in here...

Here I go again.

Here's the cylinder head ready to put back. I had stored it right here all this time. The intake manifold was not removed, nor was the camshaft turned. It went together perfectly.
Image

In this photo you can see the head gasket laying in place. The camshaft sprocket is being held tightly by two nylon fasteners.
Image

Here you see the mark plate on the timing chain and the marks on the camshaft and the #1 rocker arm shaft bracket.
Image Image

Here's the line-up!
Image

I had already torqued the head down. It was done in two steps. First, to 61 ft/lbs, and second to 73 ft/lbs. The head gasket was #8621 PT-1, by Fel-Pro, and it's a Permatorque®/PRINTOSEAL® "Never Needs Retorquing" I had replaced the heater lines prior to laying down the head.
Image

Here is the main attraction. My pet name for it since I started this last repair focused on the timing chain tensioner adjuster. If I were to give any advice to anyone out there reading this, it would be to be sure you understand this mechanism and get it right. If you leave it in a "LOCKED" position as the manuals describe it, the timing chain will be very loose and you'll end up doing an overhaul just to replace it. SO MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE IT IN THIS POSITION
Image

Coming Together!! I replaced the carburetor, exhaust manifold, radiator, and grille.
Image

Two more views.
