It has been a while since I built my last motor for myself. I am surprised of all of the small items that add up to a good chunk of money. ARP bolts, 1003 Fel Pro head gaskets, push rods, shit it keeps adding up. I guess it would have been better to buy a crate motor and just feel the pain at one time. I guess when you are this far along you need to keep charging forward.

I decided to go with a 406 CI motor, 11 to 1, 750 carb, aluminum heads, L.A billet crank, H beam rods, Keith Black pistons, 4 bolt splayed block. I have the short block done and am awaiting the new heads.

Going that specific on a motor build will cause the price tag to climb. Crate engines are not that specific and they'll build hundreds of them that are basically identical.
I'm on hold with a 383 stroker im building up and this too has gotten crazy on the cost so far. Block, machine work, Eagle kit, cam and aluminum heads have put the price tag to over 3500 dollars so far and im not even close to getting everything bought.
A crate engine would have been cheaper but it would have been someone elses idea of what a motor should be. My 383 will be what i think a motor should be.
Crate engines are cool if you're more concerned with paint and body.

I have not even started to order parts for my trans. I am looking at adding a trans brake.

I had an aftermarket H.E.I. distributor for the 383 but i ended up confiscating it from the 383 parts bin so i could get my 400 back on the road. That was a minor setback but the LUV keeps rolling.
A MSD system will most likely go with the 383 build.
I'd like to find a decent 70's GM that i could run a manual trans.

400. It is a street car so the brake won't be used much at all. I would say same thing for the NOS.

lucrv8 you should take it down the quarter mile just to see what she'll do. But let me warn you if you do it will lead to an addiction and you'll be at the track every weekend. I know first hand.

I was a drag racer in my past life, now I play with sprint cars. I have already gotten the drag race bug out of me.

I found dirt tracks. Now I can race 1/2 mile's at a time X 30 laps. My ride is now longer the 11 seconds.

That is what I was wondering!! But like the old quote about circle track racing is "like painting numbers on turds and flushing the toilet."

Any fool can go in a straight line for 11-12 seconds, now try going around a corner with someone on each side of you at full throttle. Only just a little rant as i used to race circle track.
