Cool vid! But it ain't dead, just evolved. What was affordable for the previous generation became a collectable as they got older so the next generation picked the next new thing. EX. 20's & 30's rods, then on to the tri 5 chevy's, to the 60's pony cars, to the bulkier 70's ponycars, to the 80's G bodies and ponys, etc. This is just my .02.

Yeah I agree, Nice vid but it ain't at all dead just evolved over the years. They where the hot rods gassers then time moved to muscle cars, then to what has been in my eyes a rebirth of inspiration to the hot rodding. I guess you gotta sort of include (as much as a hate it) but the latest rice burning import movement with all the honda boys. :?

All of the ricers of today are like the greasers of the fifties. Most of them work hard to earn money to build their cars, and are proud of their work. Just the way that we do our trucks, they might not be what everyone likes, but they are proud of them just the same. So the way that I see it, more power to them.

The way i see it, a Hot Rod is a generic, factory vehicle that has been modified in some way, shape or form to exceed the factory design or style. Pretty much any pre or post war vehicle could have been made into a Hot Rod. The 60's brought on the Muscle car era. These were performance oriented vehicles that could not be described as generic. So i have to consider the Muscle car in a league of it's own.
When the 70's came along, the lines began to get much more blurred. Foreign cars were more and more infused into the American culture. In our case of modifing a foreign truck with a U.S. emblem with American parts, i would still call it a Hot Rod. To purists, the Hot Rod era ended at the end of the 1950's.
I'm gonna concider my V-8 powered, 4bbl, 9" axled Chevrolet LUV as a Hot Rod!

That's a vaild point with the AC! Although the Cobra was concidered a performance racer, it was still embraced by Ford enthusiasts because of Mr. Shelby. It had an Oval badge and nobody questioned this.

And something else to consider on what defines a Hot Rod. Hot Rods were not known for their cornering and stopping capabilities. Todays modern, street performance vehicles are measured for both handling and engine performance. I believe that this would exclude them from being defined as a Hot Rod.

You knew I wouldn't leave this one alone ! these trucks are hotrods g180,v-6 or v-8 . IMHO anything can be hotroded , I prefer american power plants , but each to his own . Modified to attain greater speed . Oh, and by the way , the garage with the light on till 2 o'clock in the morning with sparks flashing in the window would be mine . I even have satilitte t.v. , surround sound , A/C & heat .

I agree and disagree with that video.

True hot rodding to me is the old school rods. Big engines, no frills, cars that could barely be afforded, with handmade parts. The "New Wave" rods that are leather interiored- fiberglassed bondo buckets are not a reflection of the era, they are a reflection on what is cool these days.

Today's hot rodding seems to be more about smaller cars with small engines that get 'rodded' I reference WRX's EVO's some civics, and to this day there are a lot of mustang enthusiasts that drop a lot of money in their cars.

Back in the day greasers were looked down on for their bad attitudes and their lack of conformity to normal society. Today the same thing is fear with these 'nothing to lose' street racers.

Evolution has taken its course, as an owner of a WRX as well as a LUV, I would like to think that I tip my hat to both era's. The WRX for the modern era of rodding. And the LUV to be a tribute to the rat rod days of old.

Cheers,
Austin
