I got a set of vortec heads from a freind off his chevy truck. They only have 56,000 miles on them. He had an intake gasket replaced on it and from what the tech said is some of the scrapings from the old gasket got into the bottom end and clogged up the oil passages to the crank. So he got a new crate engine installed and is parting the old engine out. So my question would be, should I do a valve job or not? If I dont have to Id rather spend the money on valve springs and such.

Ah.. The top end-bottom end question. If you know for certian that a set of heads were in solid shape, i can see someone bolting them down to a solid working shortblock that has it share of miles on it.
But you must be comfortable with the parts and trust the seller.
Rebuilding a set of heads and installing them on a working motor will cause the lower end to wear even faster. And visa versa, a rebuilt shortblock with used heads will cause the heads to fail faster than usual.
Strengthen the top end, the bottom end will have problems
Strengthen the bottom end, the top end will have problems.

Gasket scrapings would have clogged the pickup screen and finer material would have been caught by the oil filter. If the crank got plugged up with crap, he had something major go bad.
Study those heads carefully.

If you were going to replace the springs anyway, a valve job at that time would be cheap insurance. If nothing needs to be replaced but the valve seals, a valve job in my area costs $62.50. I'd do it just for the piece of mind.
