I know that a ford 9 inch or GM 12 bolt is the way to go for a rear end if u r doing a v-8 conversion, but can a built 7.5 handle some power?

They Can Handle Round and About Like 400 HP W/O Any Hard Launches. They Can Only Handle A Few Times Dead Hooking and They Explode Normally.

They are not very strong . I watched 6 Camaros leave the track on roll back wrecker the other day . The weather is getting colder and more power is put to cold( 60 * and below ) axle parts and bang . just a suggestion if you don't drive to the track , take your jack and stands and warm the rear axle in cold weather . Sorry to get off the original subject , I would say 9" , 10 bolt 8.5 , AMC 20 , Dana 44 or of coarse Dana 60 . I'm just not a big 12 bolt car axle fan .

i saw that moser makes aftermarket axles and t/A performance makes a support cover for the 7.5.

There's an article in the Jan 2007 edition of Chevy Performance on building a 10 bolt, 8.2 inch axle to survive. The theory is that a smaller ring and pinion set is easier to spin that a larger one.
The thing that slows me down on the project is that they stayed with the c-clip design.

Grudd, a 9 inch with stock axles will be at least as strong as an upgraded axle 7.5 Most of the older truck 9 inches come with 31 spline axles, They can be shortened easily. Having the housing and axles shortened and redrilled if you want a smaller bolt pattern costs about the same as a new set of 7.5 axles, at least around my neck of the woods. The advantage is you have the c-clips eliminated and bigger brakes with the 9 inch. If you upgrate the 7.5 with c-clip eliminators, you still have to modify the housing, so there is the cost involved with that also. You can have a good rear for the same price and still be able top upgrade it later, or you can max the 7.5 and still be marginal. Just a thought.

I have to agree with mytmouz. That's a lot of work to try and make a 7.5 handle some power. A Ford 9" is way easier to build, stock setup can handle quite a bit. And if you want, you can swap out the 3rd member in a couple of hrs and only need a gasket. Upgrades are cheap (compared to other axle assys).
But if you're dead set to give the 7.5 a run, then rock and roll man!

I have used the s10 rear land speed racing.I am going to a 9 inch.
400hp + good track + good tires = $ in fixing all that gets broke. The 9 inch will last. cheaper ,stronger, the s10 parts can work but will cost more

I can see running an S-10 for land speed. The less mechanical drag, the better. It has to put up with a power load but not instantainiously like a hard launch at the dragstrip.
It sounds like you decided to upgrade for longevity reasons. I guess you'll have to add more power to the motor to compensate for the extra mechanical drag... Bummer :D

Going to 9in so with 4-500 hp at 6000 rpms I have no issues. The s-10 bearings axle may not like 170+ mph. The one I have is cleared to 200+ but at those speeds when things go bad it is REAL Bad .A broke drive shaft means at a min motor, trans, rear+body work.
I trust the s-10 rear to a point but not past it
