Well I want to keep you guys posted up to date because I can, and because it's fun. This is a great benefit to anyone owning a Luv and a great pleasure when you really enjoy working on your Luv, as I do.

Today I'm rebuilding the carburetor. The exhaust manifold is overheating and cracking from off the previously welded crack. It has been suggested to me there could be several different reasons for the overheating. I have opted to rebuild the carburetor since the idle adjusting screw seems to have no effect on the RPM. I was going to replace the exhaust pipe and muffler, but I thought I should try the carb first. If the manifold still overheats,(the pipe directly attached to the manifold glows red after idling for ten minutes), then the pipe/muffler will be next.

Sorry, no pics today. It's raining a lot.

Manifold overheating at idle? Most common reason is late ignition timing. Make sure it is set to spec at idle. 6, 8, or 12 degrees BTDC depending on the year. What happens is it will not idle untill you crank up the idle speed screw. When the throttle is opened too far then the idle mixture adjustment will have no effect. You might check this out first if you haven't already.----just a thought. Might save you some time and trouble.

Thanks for the tip Egg, but I'm not able to test it yet.

I'm in the middle of putting a rebuild kit in my Hitachi DCP 340. That could have been the case that the throttle was too open, it is unknown to me. The condition of the carburetor was pretty bad. It has been partially cleaned and set down for the moment. I'm using a can of carb cleaner for the solvent, and an old rotary toothbrush.

Image

The heating element in the electric choke, (looks like a long ball point pen spring), disintegrated and fell out when I opened it. Looks like I'll be adding at least a makeshift manual choke until I either get a conversion kit, or replace the electric choke. Of course I'll be checking on that first thing in the morning.

Image

The throttle chamber assembly body and the float chamber assembly body did not fit together level and some filing was done to make the two pieces fit tight.

The primary chamber wasn't even being used, and was all black. The injector weight was missing and instead had two steel balls.

Image

The counter lever after the choke connecting rod wasn't even connected to the diaphram.

It's a careful process, and I'll enjoy bringing you all up to speed on the progress.

Yes, I'm working on it everyday. Sometimes a lot, and sometimes a little.

During the course of this restoration I put up a tarp to keep out the rain. My next door neighbor had a fit. He's a big black fella, a chef by trade. He said the tarp was ugly, and that it had to come down because it was against the city's building codes or some thing like that. He asked me three days after I got the truck how long it was going to take me to get it finished. As I hadn't ever owned a LUV, I told him maybe a week, but I wasn't sure. He said he could wait a week, but that it was coming down before two or three weeks and he wasn't going to tolerate it. He also said I was lowering property values in this neighborhood, and that he was taking a risk buying the house he is in. I think it is in his girlfriend's name, however.

I have been doing all the work on this truck wondering when he was going to show his face again and neither him or his girlfriend have spoken to me in the last two months. On the contrary, all the other neighbors around here think it's a great thing and are enjoying checking it out. Last Sunday, I was trying to get the pin that holds the door stop in the lower hinge out of the passenger door. The door stop is broken and I need to replace it, along with a spring. I was striking it underneath the pin with a ballpeen hammer, the door off the hinges, when this fella I'll call Doofus, shows up on the edge of the driveway and starts yelling at me! It's after 10 AM in the morning, and I want to finish painting the door area and get it ready for new weatherstripping which hasn't arrived, but should be here any second. I was on my knees, looked up and saw his ugly face shouting, "Hey, hey, don't you know that some people work around here and need their rest, and cut out the noise!" I told him I didn't care what he wanted. He said he was going to call the police and I told him go ahead I didn't care what he did. He disappeared for a minute, came back out with a camera, walked out on the street, and snapped some photos. That was all. I didn't see the police. I am sick of Doofus, and the next time he harasses me I'm calling 911 on him.

Anybody got that part I need?

Be careful with the neighbor. That's the kind of stuff I see on the six o'clock news.

Hey I'm not breaking any laws, Doofus is. I have a right to make any noise I want after 7 AM on weekdays and 9 AM on weekends. I will be careful to call 911 next time though, oh yeah. I'm not going to be intimidated by his bogus demands. I'm going to fix the tarp to stay up permanently when I get the LUV on the road. All I need is a pier block and a 4x4, and one 12' 2x4.

It's been 9 weeks!

I'll try to teach my wife how to post a word in here if I meet my untimely demise, thank you Mr. Porter!

Anybody got the part that's broken in the photo above? I think it should be called a door stop, and should have the spring along with it.

Go get you a cheap car cover and use that. Most places don't have a problem with those vs a tarp. Deed restrictions are a different matter.

But thats why I don't live in the city. As long as I don't start a grass fire or house fire, I am ok

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

Could you two keep that in PMs please? Lets keep threads on topic.

As for that part, I've always fixed them by just swapping the entire hinge. I don't know if that part even had a different part number in the parts book, I'll have to check.

I hope your annoying neighbor doesn't stir up any trouble for you. I once had a guy tailgate me on the highway and then pull into a friend's driveway behind me. He got out and yelled me up one side and down the other for speeding in "his town" and threatened to turn me in. I told him I'd call the cops and turn him in for reckless driving and menacing if he didn't back off. He stomped off and I never heard another thing about it. Sometimes you are better off to bring on the law yourself, even if you might be a little bit in the wrong.

I am so cheered up!!!! Ha ha ha.... The ramblin' between red and black!

As for the black and white...I went out at 7:03 AM yesterday and took my all-steel tailgate and dropped it and slammed it three times. I might do it again today.

A, I like yer idee-ah!!!

PapaG I am not wrong to put the tarp up.

800 is on the money once again. I pounded and pounded as best I could with various means trying to get the pin out and it wouldn't budge. This I did in the afternoon yesterday. I am going to pull off the doors to apply my new weatherstripping today. It's 5 AM right now. At 7 AM I plan to start with the door removal and then give the pin some more pounding. I should be looking for a whole hinge to acquire the part anyway. For sure if I were to go to a wrecking yard the easiest way to bring the part out would be to get the whole hinge. For my own purposes, I'm trying to fix the spot to receive the replacement part whenever I do get ahold of it. I don't know if anyone out there would have the hinge and be willing to part with it. Perhaps a door that was beyond repair? Anybody got it? I think a new post would be a good attention-getter, and I'm going to specifically ask for the lower passenger door hinge, with an emphasis that the door stop and spring be attached.

God Bless Us All To Get Along
