Perhaps a simple question, but an ongoing bebate :? ....

On the dipstick for the oil in my 79 Mikado with stock 1.8L Isuzu engine.... the part that goes into the engine is short (6 inches?) as far as oil dipsticks go.... round at the top and then flattened out to make two sides, toward the bottom; about the last 2/3 of the part that actually goes into the engine is flattened instead of round. There's a section on one side of the flattened part of the dipstick that has hash marks on it (criss-crossed lines).

I have had both answers adamantly explained to me to be gospel =

1) The top of the hash marks IS the full line / marker.

2) The top of the hash marks is actually the "add oil" marker and the top of the flattened section is the "full" marker.

I can't find any info about this in a manual or online. After a fatal trip to Jiffy Lube in late November and then a visit to a locally owned little lube shop to take out.... 3 quarts? (just before it started to bellow blue smoke  ) and then a new head gasket.... I REALLY wanna know the answer to this so I don't have another disaster.

Thank you for your input, LUV people! 8)

the bottom is suupposed to be a quart low the top of coarse is full that area in between is what factories call the safe zone. but the marks are mainly there to retain oil to make the dipstick easier to read.

As long as you have oil in the area where the hashmarks are, you're safe.... I've always heard not to add small amounts, just add a quart if it's at the bottom of the marks...

buddie of mine once got a bronco (fullsize) and it smoked like a BITCH when you went up a hill or tilted the truck side to side.
drove us NUTS trying to figure it out........fianely when he changed the oil we found the problem.
it had 14 quarts of oil in IT!!!
what happened was the dipstick tube gummed up and everytime the previous owners would pull it to check the oil, it would wipe it clean....and the would add more oil
needless to say the eng had to be rebuilt

my buddies 75 datsun pick up had the oil add thing as the dipstick. The dipstick hole was about as big as the oil port on the top of the luvs 1.8 and you would just pull the dip stick to add oil. It was a perty cool idea i think, you didnt have to wait for oil to drain down to check the level after adding.
