Perhaps a simple question, but an ongoing bebate

....
On the dipstick for the oil in my 79 Mikado with stock 1.8L Isuzu engine.... the part that goes into the engine is short (6 inches?) as far as oil dipsticks go.... round at the top and then flattened out to make two sides, toward the bottom; about the last 2/3 of the part that actually goes into the engine is flattened instead of round. There's a section on one side of the flattened part of the dipstick that has hash marks on it (criss-crossed lines).
I have had both answers
adamantly explained to me to be gospel =
1) The top of the hash marks IS the full line / marker.
2) The top of the hash marks is actually the "add oil" marker and the top of the flattened section is the "full" marker.
I can't find any info about this in a manual or online. After a fatal trip to Jiffy Lube in late November and then a visit to a locally owned little lube shop to take out.... 3 quarts? (just before it started to bellow blue smoke

) and then a new head gasket.... I REALLY wanna know the answer to this so I don't have another disaster.
Thank you for your input, LUV people!
