I'm trying to install a steering wheel on my Dad's 78 Chevy Luv, but my universal steering wheel remover doesn't work.

Is there a workaround for this? I read in some other forum to place your hands at the 3 and 9 positions slide the wheel back and forth using brute force. The wheel is falling apart so don't know if this will work.

Is the correct steering wheel puller sold someplace? After some net searching I have come up empty. I'm hoping someone will have some information that may help me.

Thanks...

Hmmm... I must be missing something. I can't find anyplace on the steering wheel to thread my screws through.

I've looked at the series 8 manual and the steering wheel remover they show is something that looks like a modified "C" clamp.

My bad, I thought you had a mikado steering wheel.

You can try this, but be careful not to hurt the threads

Put the steering wheel nut back on until it is flush with the top of the shaft.

Use both of your legs to put pressure on the wheel to help it off, put as much pressure as you can

Now get a hammer and strike the shaft/nut. Like I said, be careful not to hurt the threads of the shaft and you might need to replace the nut as well. You can also use a air hammer (chatter gun) in the middle of the steering shaft instead of a hammer.

I have done this many times with several makes, do not hurt the shaft threads.

Thanks for the replies guys !! Guess I will try the wiggle method, would try the other but really afraid of messing up the threads.

Guess if nothing works, I could break out the old dremel and cut it off. Wonder if that would work.

Thanks again, will let you know how it turns out.

Have Someone Tap On The Center Stud/Bolt Thing W/ A Hammer While You Pull and Wiggle It Is The Easiest Way I Have Found.

i just had the same problem with mine. the universal i got didn't fit. so i went and got a 3 jaw puller. it worked fine but left little dents on the side of the center of the wheel. oh well since it's the old wheel it doesn't really matter eh. mine was really stuck.

It is not advised to hit the steering shaft be it with the nut on or off. One, it can damage the pin that joins the telescopic together and two, you can ruin the bearing in the top of the shaft under the steering wheel.

Id do it only as a last resort.

Best way ive found is to hook your knees up under the wheel and grab on with one hand on the top, push up with your knees and pull with your hand with your free hand bang on the side of the rim with the flat of your palm. Im right handed so i hit about three o'clock. You only need to shock it enough to make the taper let go.

Cheers, Bob.

Amazingly enough, I happened to pass by a tool shop at lunch today and found a 4" 3 Jaw Puller, I decided to give it a shot and it worked like a charm. Wish I would have seen fuferman's post before I went to bed, would have saved me a restless night.

Got the grant steering wheel on, but couldn't use the original spring washer, could only use the nut. I tightened the nut pretty tightly so hoping all goes well when I road test it this weekend.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm glad I found this site a while back, been lurking for at least 4-5 months, ever since I decided to start getting the truck back to its former glory.

Well after my trial run today, the results are a hit and miss. I didn't install the roll pin for signal light cancellation because I didn't see an equivalent on anything I removed. So I spent the day manually turning off the signal light. I guess I will insert it into the Grant hub and pray I set it up right. Any suggestions on how to set this up properly, would be appreciated.

The Grant steering wheel I purchased was 13.5", some of the gauges are obscured. Should I upgrade it in the future I will probably go 14"+, I think that will work best.

On the plus side the new steering wheel rocks, I love the look and feel of it, so I'm still a happy camper. :D
