I've been working half a day to get the brake drum off the passenger side of one of my LUVs. The driver's side came off after only about 45 minutes of hammering and a pint of WD40.

I really want to get the other set of shoes installed....

As a last resort you can try using a large 3 or 4 arm gear puller. Try using PB blaster, works much better than wd40. I you have an oxy/acetylene torch you can try appplying some heat to the drum while hitting it with a hammer.

good old hot wrench, remember to apply heat to the drum NOT the axle

You did not say how wore out your brakes were, so I will give you something to look for. It could be your brakes have wore into the drum, and you will need to back the brakes off, so the drum can come off. On the back of the brake backing plate, there should be a oval shaped hole, with a rubber plug. Stick a screw driver in there and back the brakes off. Hope this helps.

Only time I've ever had problems getting a drum off was when the shoes were worn into the drum. I suppose something like a good penetrating oil might help if the drum is just stuck solid to the axle, but if it is moving around against the axle it is probably the shoes stuck in a groove on the drum.

Dude did you take the screw out of the drum?
Originally the drums have a screw in them.

I drilled the screw. It was beyond removal with an impact driver. I've already changed the driver's side...I just can't get the passenger side to come off.

well you could always unbolt the axle and take the whole thing off.....if the drum is stuck to the axle that is. If it is stuck to the shoes.....can you get to the auto adjuster?
