I have a 1980 truck. I currently have the head off doing a little valvework and I saw a big "G200" embossed on the drivers side of the block. I thought the 1980 trucks had a G180. Can anyone help me identify the engine that is in the truck? Thanks Dan

there is also a "G200" on the front of the head and a "2L" on the back of the head.

Does anyone know if this is Stock engine or has it had a swap in its past????

as far as i know if it says g200 on the block then it's a g200 block. you might have g180 heads on it though. wich means someone that had it before you wanted a lil more power. or just blew the engine and had a newer one layin around.

Head Says "G200" also. Does that mean this thing has a 2.0L engine?

Technically it is a 1.9L but you got it right. That must have been swapped in at some point before you owned it. Watch putting a G180 head on that if you ever need to replace the head. The bump in compression would add some power, but you might need to start buying premium gas or adding octane booster.

thanks for the help guys nice to have a little biger engine. also means not as many miles on the engine although I took it apart because #1 cylinder had abut 20psi compression. after i got it appart I discoved that #1 intake valve is bent.

Have any of you ever tried the poor mans head rebuild? meaning just lapping the new/old valves and putting the head back on? lapped a couple of them tonight and they clean up pretty good. Although I do not know how wide the contact area should be. after lapping they look to be about .070" to .090 wide.

As long as they are all even and roughly the same the "lap" area shouldnt be too relavant.

Using a secondhand valve wont be a drama, ive done it before. The above applies, if its as good as the rest it will do the trick.

If the valve is bent theres got to be a reason, be sure and have a good look into that.

Cheers, Bob.

thanks Bob. I was wondering myself what caused one bent intake Valve. I was expecting to see a bad exhaust valve.

Do you have any ideas what would cause one bent intake valve. I sure can't.

spring is good. no evidence that it has hit anything. just a slight bend preventing it form seating all the way.

Only theory I can come up with is that something dropped down through the carb and went through that cylinder. If that is what happened whatever it was must have made its way through the exhaust valve without causing any more damage.

Actually I do have a couple of other ideas. It could have been bent during the install of the head or they could have gotten the cam timing wrong, bent the valve, and then corrected the timing and got it running.

I like the bending the valve with the head off idea. You would be surprised how people will treat a head thats assembled. Sitting one flat on a bench is a no no.

If it was dont this way it would have run none too well.

If the timing was out enough to bend one valve i would expect them all to be bent. You just about need to crank the starter to exert enough force. Two rotations of the motor will bend every valve in the head.

Something dropping thru the motor would be 100% pure ass just to only affect the inlet valve.

The only other possible cause i can think of is the old screw driver in the plug hole TDC trick. Someone stuffed that up.

Is there a whitness mark in the top of the pistion, there should be if the pistion has bent it, the piston is softer material.

Bob.

no mark on the cylinder. The guy I bought it form was driving it around on 3 cylinders for some time. He told me to rev it up and it would get moving for me. I thought I would try to make it run on all 4 cylinders.

If there is no dent in the cylinder thats a good sign.

There is another reason, something had caught in the seat as the valve has closed, but i doubt the valve spring would be strong enough to bend the valve.

well i'll put my two cents in too. "soon you'll be able to pay for new vavles lol" anyways. i'd say something fell in the carb and went out the exhaust like 800xl said. in wich case i'd look for scarring on the cylender walls cus if something was kickin around in there for a few rotations there could be some damage

It could be that the valve hung up from the engine setting around before it was put in the truck. Oh and when you hand lap the valves (that is how it used to be done) Use a marker pen and go around the seat with it then lap one more time and you will see the pattern on the seat the wipe it off and done. Another trick is to mark the seat and use your fingers and slap the valve against the seat and rotate a few times.

If you have only one slightly bent valve...then I'd bet that someone prior to you owning your truck got his intake and exhaust valves mixed up, or screwed up adjusting one during a valve lash adjustment.

It's relatively easy to do if you don't pay close attention to what you are doing...or get too distracted.

Or get to the bottom of a jug of whiskey...or to the last bottle of a 12-pack of beer too soon.

Or sacrifice way too much sacred herbs to the great fire god.

Not that I would know anything about such matters...it's just something I heard somewhere...lol

well here is the update. at first I was being cheap just ordered one exhaust and one intake valve. then i put a crowbar in my wallet and ordered valves for the other cylinders. since I was waiting on the valves I started porting and polishing the head and fixing some rusty parts of the truck, rocker and floor boards

Taz we should get together sometime I live in tumwater also. off littlerock road and 81st.

Update on bent intake valve.
I had previously stated that no marks on top of the piston..... after closer inspection and some carbon removal i discovered three mall dents. so looks like those who guessed a foreign object coming in were correct.....
