sorry for the double post.

Why does my 78 idle so high?
How do I adjust this?
Could it be that the choke is stuck? cant find the choke switch.
yes I am new to all of this. But eager to learn about my truck. The manual is on the way.

thanks

After warmup, the choke butterfly should be sitting vertical in the carburator throat. Is it? If not and therefore somewhat closed, that will speed up the idle. It must be adjusted so that there is approximately a sixteenth inch gap when the engine is cold. That's done by twisting the black phenolic round cover on the side of the carb after loosening the three screws holding it down.

There is also an idle speed adjust screw right near the throttle shaft where the cable hooks on. It sticks out toward the passenger side of the truck and has a spring around the shaft of the screw. Check the choke first though. If the choke is the problem backing the idle speed off would leave you over choking and running rich, or it may not work to slow it down.

ok so I tried messing with the electronic choke. aligned the marks but now I cant get the three litle screws to tighten down enough to keep the end part from turning? Still idles way to high sounds like its going to blow!!
Is a carburator tune up expensive? It is a newer carb. Just needs some adjusting. and I dont know what the hell Im doing. and the manuals just suck at explaining anything to a non mechanic.

Take the black cover off and inside is a coil spring that expands or contracts with temperature change thereby lengthening of shortening the spring. At the end is a hook that fits over the linkage inside from the choke. You must rotate the the coil around until it hooks over the linkage before adjusting the choke butterfly. Sorry, can't remember if it's clockwise or counter clockwise.

ok I think I have successfully adjusted the choke. Takes less time for it to warm up and idle down. But now I think I need to get it timed. I get backfiring and it has no power and it stalls sometimes at the stop light. It is an old truck however but I think it could still run a little smoother.

A tune up could be in order.

New points and condenser, new spark plugs and leads (wires). Then time it, no point timing it first unless your sure the ignition componants are servicable.

Cheers, Bob.

Hey Stubble,
Don't pay $300 for a carb rebuild; I know a guy who will do it for $181. I am new to Luvs too, I just got one last September 5. I have gotten it running and am doing the POR-15 floorpan restoring right now. I put the final coat on today, but I think I might add another one for good measure. Then a liner is going in from RockAuto.com. I'll be rolling soon.

:D It's a '78 too!!!

well its too late, hes got it. he is supposed to be really good at it, and he will do the smog for it cus Im here in CA. I told him as long as it passes smog, he said dont worry.
I know $300 is in in the high range for a rebuild.

http://carburetorfactory.com/

The carburetor factory says $239. Another alternative for the future.

I still have to get mine to start out right when it's cold. I haven't touched the choke yet. I don't like the instructions my Haynes #319 manual is giving me, but I'll give it a try later.

I guess we in CA need a special emission friendly carburator.
$300 for removal, rebuild, installation and then adjustement to pass smog, is probably not a bad deal. A least it makes me feel better to think this way :?

I wouldnt be paying that much. All your exhaust consists of is the primary pipe and intermediate pipe and a muffler. In most cases the tail pipe up over the diff is not needed on a ute/truck. Its only small diameter if std size and should be reasonable inexpensive.

We were talking about the carburetor, not the exhaust system.
