The day before I got my truck smogged, all three of these went out at the same time:
Brake lights (both sides), Wipers, and the Fan on my heater.
I checked the fuses, and even swapped out a few of them.
I then pulled the lenses on drivers side, it was a litte crodid behind the bulb so, I cleaned that out. My turn signals still work though.

What should I check next?

I had an interesting experience last weekend. I went out on Saturday morning, and the truck just wouldn't start. The fan wouldn't work, the fuel pump wouldn't work, it wouldn't even turn over, no lights, etc

Long story short, it was the connections on the bottom of the fuse block.

I was in the middle of troubleshooting the problem, and I bumped the fuse block, and heard the fuel pump come on. I put my hand underneath, wiggled the wires, and everything started working again. :o

I'm sure the terminals are corroded to some degree.

Hope this helps.

Hey thanks, I'll check that. At least thats something easy to eleminate.

I wonder how many corroded fuse block connections can be attributed to the removal of the inner front fender aprons?

Seems kind of odd, I can't see a relationship between the things you are having trouble with. The brake lights are powered all the time, the wipers are on the ACC circuit, as is the heater fan. It seems like no one problem could account for all three.

The fuse block is always a good place to check for strange electrical problems. I cleaned all the connectors on my 77's block and the lights worked better, heater fan blew harder, and the motor even seemed to run better. When I put it back together I also hit each connection with some contact grease, in hopes of slowing down the return of the corrosion. You might want to check connections at the battery too, could be a loose wire up there causing problems. I'd also check the plug to the ignition switch, make sure it is getting a good connection. For that matter, might even try swapping it out if you have a spare.

I cleaned the fuse connectors where the fuses go and the tabs on the bottoms where the wires plug into. That didnt help, but it was good that I did it. Then I went to grap a tool, and the wipers and fan came back on.
Still don't have brake lights. I tried unpluging the switch and I bi-pased the switch and hooked the wires together, that way it should be a compelte circuit until I unplug it. But still no lights. I'm think the problem lies in the wires for both wiper & heater fan and the brake lights.

I decide to replace my rear wiring. There are 2 plugs next the wiper fluid resivor. The wires run down the frame, conects to the fuel pump and sending unit, then has one single plug near the license plate. I figure I'll do all the wire from the dual plugs to the tail-lights. Under the dash, will be another day (much bigger project!).

If anyone else has a 79/80, can you look on the plugs by the resivor. I'm missing a wire that goes into the plug (it has a little remainder leftover, but its corrided so its been that way for awhile). Its a 4 wire plug. The wires on there now are Red w/blue stripe, yellow w/red stripe , and solid green.

If someone can tell me what color the fourth wire is and tell me where it goes, it would be very helpful, Thanks! 8)

I have fuse block problems too! I've had my Luv just five weeks now, and I almost have it ready to start!!!

Sometimes things won't work like the horn, the marker lights, or the wipers. Wiggling the fuses seems to do the trick, but I can't live with that. Does anyone know of a good replacement for the fuse block?

I tried sandpapering the contacts and I replaced all six fuses, but still intermittent.

I used to have some trouble on my 77 with the lighting switch fuse connection going out (usually at night when I really needed lights) or heating up a whole lot. Cleaning just the upper contact for the fuse with sandpaper was not enough, it needed the lower contacts where the wires come/go to be cleaned up.

I finally just took the whole block off and cleaed up every contact to shiny, top and bottom. I then put some contact grease on every contact(look for "bulb grease" at an auto parts store) before I put it back together. I figured the grease should help keep the contacts clean and corrosion free. That was about 4 years ago and it has been happy ever since.

Zane: I just wrote down the wires you are looking for and I'll go out and figure out what the other missing wire is right now.

The one truck I had real bad wiring gremlins on turned out to be caused almost entirely by the main alternator wire. It had obviously gotten very hot on the end by the alt, but I didn't think about the effects of that inside the wiring harness. Turned out it had melted the insulation off itself in several places, and even melted into a couple other wires in the bundle crossing over the top of the firewall. I finally had to fix it when it managed to short to the reverse light circuit and start feeding the entire ignition "ON" circuit directly from the battery. I could shut the key off and the truck would stay running. I had more problems with things working when they shouldn't rather than not at all though. Still, it is worth considering as a possible problem source. So, take a look at the wires near your battery and alternator, if the jacket looks crusty like they have gotten cooked, start thinking about pulling apart that wiring bundle to see if the damage extended to other wiring.

I am working on my '78 everyday, and today I cleaned the fuse block just like described above. I got too aggressive and broke one of the brass posts, so now I need to replace that post, and perhaps I'll have to purchase a whole fuse block just to get the post...

Unless I go to a good electronics supply or somewhere they might have that type of post. The cleaning seemed to help, but I still got some more things to check like the cigarette lighter. I don't smoke, but I want the power source.

I installed the exhaust manifold today. It was painted a high-temp blue. My neighbor gave me the paint. This manifold had a crack in it and I had it welded, but when the outside weld was sprayed with brake parts cleaner, it penetrated through. (I also had it resurfaced, before I checked the weld!) I'm still going to try it long enough to flush the engine.

It is great weather for painting, so I did a little around the passenger door, mainly the rusted areas.

I also opted to try Heet in the gas tank, plus a cleaner, along with four gallons of gas. I don't want to drop the tank until I know I need to. I have a locking gas cap on order, so I didn't add the fuel yet.

I'll install the intake manifold tomorrow. Maybe I'll browse around for a fuse block. Pretty soon I get to take my first ride in a Luv!

I fixed the fuse block post by holding it together with a fuse end inserted and soldering. I then removed the fuse end and snapped the post back into the fuse block, and it's all good!!!!

I got the intake manifold in yesterday, and the carburetor back together, so it's just about time!! I cleaned up the air cleaner and pretty soon I'll have it done. I have some more parts coming, so I have to wait.

800Xl,

Turned out a wire that ran off the fuse block had one of those connectors where you put to wires into and crimp it. I did learn quit ea bit on what wires went where by tracing them out.
