There's a running 85 4x4 trooper for sale not far from my home (cheap). The seller says it runs good, but has an idle problem while warming up (body is rusted)...

So, my questions:
Did these trucks have the G200 engine?
If it has power steering and the G200, I understand the pump and brackets are a bolt up to the G180, but is the power steering gear bolt up without mods?
I expect these trucks have wider track axles, but is the 3rd member the same as the LUV's?

Is there anything else on the Trooper that would be of use on a LUV?

Thanks,
Tom

YEs the 84 and 85 Troopers had G200s and 4speeds in em. The axles should be interchangable, however with my 86 the rear diff was a bit diferent, however that was a 4.56 pumpkin and yours should still be the 4.10 pumpkin so it might work. As far as power steering goes, the box should bolt on in place of your factory manual box. You might have to play with the shaft a bit to get it to hook up but it shouldnt be a big deal. The biggest thing i see in that swap would be plumbing it.
Im not 100% on this stuff though, so lets wait for 800xl to give the difinitive answer here.

I just did a search here...here is a thread already posted where someone already did the power steering conversion from a trooper to a luv, complete with detailed instructions:

http://forums.luvtruck.com/viewtopic.php?t=2325&highlight=power+steering

And BTW...just for future reference...if it can be done to a Luv, then it's bound to be here somewhere...lol

Anytime...glad to help.

Doing a search here will sure get you out of almost any severe case of head-scratching and help keep you from throwing wrenches at your truck...lol

We are very lucky to have great management here compared to most sites....that is for sure.

In fact if it's important enough - Ben and the staff here put it in the front section of the site under information here: http://www.luvtruck.com/Information.htm so it's easier to find.

Or they put it under the links here: http://www.luvtruck.com/links.php

Or it usually winds up as a sticky at the top of it's appropriate section.

If its 85 it could be one of a few things.

Its could be powered by a 2.3L 4ZD1 motor and have a 5 speed behind it.
To use that box its easier to drop your luv cab on the trooper chassis.

It could be a G200 but with a 5 speed behind it. This was a special order option. Well it was down under.

Or it could be a G200 4 speed. the budget pack.

The rear track is the same on the Trooper up till 11/87 when they changed series and went to rear discs and the EFI motor. The rear track 82-86 on the trooper is the same as the luv which is the same as the Pup form 82-87. In fact the diff is the exact same unit. There were differences in the E-brake mechanisim and also the spring pads but they are the same.

Just a note on the thread with the steering conversion info.

The motor that was in that Trooper was a 4ZD1 2.3L. Not a G200.

You could get a 2L G200 powered Trooper with power steering. The pump for the steering bolts up under the alternator.

If you get all the lines and brackets the lot should lay in your luv like its meant to be there.

But as was proved in the thread if its got a 2.3L (or 2.6L for that matter) you can still use the stuff and get it to work.

Cheers, Bob.

Hey thanks Bob, great info. The Trooper was sold when I called and the wife (who took my call) didn't know anything other than it was gone.
I'll be watching for part-outs for the power steering stuff.

Are the brackets for the power steering pump the same for A/C and non A/C equiped donor rigs with G200s?

Are there any parts on the Isuzu diesel engines that crossover (bolt-up) to the G180?

Your welcome.
Make sure you double check before handing out the hard earned. Im a long way away and what they did here might be different to your side of the world.
