Hey I was wondering the easiest way to tell what year engine I have in my '79. None on the distributors that NAPA lists for all LUVs fit my distributor. It has an ISUZU and the NIPPONDENSO logo on the red label, but like I said none of the caps fit. It has had an ECHLIN EP513 cap on it but its getting pretty tired. I guess i just want to know what kind of distributor is in this thing, and the best way to ID an engine.

Thanks for any info!

I'm surprised that the Echlin cap can't be cross referenced.

When you hold the replacement cap in your hand, is it bigger or smaller than the one you are trying to replace, or is it a different issue all together?

Couple of thoughts:

1) I have a 79, and I recently discovered that the original voltage regulator is a 1980, not a 1979. Plug is different shape. 1979/1980 was a model year change. Maybe you got the last 1979 ever produced and they stuck a 1980 distributor in!

2) I just put an electronic ignition from an 84 Isuzu in, and the distributor cap is not the same size as the one I took out. I tried to put the original cap on, but the diameter was a little too small, maybe about an 1/8" or so.

3) Maybe the model numbers on the distributor could give a clue. There are some gurus who may know this.

Hope some of this helps. Good luck.

It should be the same cap for 76-80, so either the store has gotten the wrong part for you, or you have a different distributor from something else in there. I'd try a different parts shop I think.

When I get home I'll dig up the part number I use when I get them from NAPA. Most places should be able to cross with it and you can find out if you are getting the wrong part or have a different disti.
