Today is the day that my friend Mike and his son Josh are coming in to town to buy my his first car. It's a 89 Mazda MPV mini van. It runs pretty good, a/c works and it's going for 500.00. Josh is stoked to get it! A used soccer mom vehicle with faded paint on the hood and roof.
But Josh isn't seeing things this way, he sees a repainted black, custom tires and rims, killer sound system, rolling party van!
Mike's older son had a 2000 Honda Accord handed to him with the idea of him taking over payments and the car has gone down hill from that point. He has excuses for not making payments and maintenance has fallen behind along with body damage because he and his buddies are fools.
Mikes oldest son wouldn't be caught dead in a MPV because he has champagne tastes. But Josh will have a car thats all his (he saved his own money for this) and it provides a major gain of independence.
I was expecting Josh to shun the idea of a minivan but he suprised me with his eagerness to get it. I am impressed with his attitude and the fact that image takes a back seat to ability. I'm going to help him along as much as i can with this project.
The Honda on the other hand, has been a pain in the ass for me and i'd like to see it stolen.

Yep. Every kid is different. I see major differences in my 3 sons. 1 is fine wearing Payless shoes and the other will "just die" if he doesn't get those cool skate shoes (insert name brand here), even if he has to pitch in for them.

And some kids get moral support and no financial support and it teaches them good lessons, I am a product and a believer of that, good for Josh that he is stoked about a fun car, kudos to him for saving up, the way it should be done.

I followed them back to Bryan Tx. It was hilarious! Mike and I kept in contact with cell phones and i mentioned for him to pull over at some point so we could verify the engine temp, instruments of the MPV. Mike was running point with Josh behind him and i was following. Mike finally pulled over and it was a good thing he did because it was starting to get dark. The MPV was running right and Josh couldn't find the headlight switch. Once we got near Bryan, I took off ahead and left both Mike and Josh behind. Josh didn't even go straight to the house. He had to go over to his friends house to show off his new ride.
The next morning Josh removed the mid-seat of the van. He's thinking of getting a DVD system for the back.
He's got the van registered and insured. It's legally his and it complies with Texas law.
The A/C quit the next day and i couldn't get to fix it. He had to pick up his bro and sis from school and they whined and complained that it was too hot. Josh didn't like the idea of them griping about his wheels. We fixed the A/C and he's relieved to see it work again.

He gets 3 people to school, gets himself to work. He's taking the added responsibilities that come along when getting a vehicle. And he hasn't bitched about it.

Good for him, sounds like he's wise beyond his years, thats more than I can say for some ppl I know

(My good friend also drives a minivan, a 1993 Pontiac Trassport it's pretty cool though, we've dubbed it the "Spaceship" )

teenager + minivan + dark limo tint = teenage pregnancy

j/k (kinda) that is cool that there are still kids out there that are just happy to have a car and are proud of it.

Dont think that concept hasn't come up. It was the only negative aspect of going thru with the buy.

Thats also why I liked going the single cab pick up with no shell route. It can't be a bedroom or a party full of friends mobile.
I have too many memories of using my mom's 77 Chevy van.

Door open, her on her back, legs out and up, him standing... any vehicle seat will do.

OK... You win... He'll end up getting some hoe knocked up, joining the Coast Guard thinking he'll avoid the middle-east. Gets assigned to a hovercraft patroling the Tigris river and gets blown away by some Al-Qaida squad.
And it's all because Uncle John hooked him up with a "Shag Wagon".

I'm sure that's not going to happen.
