First of all, welcome to the site. You've come to the right place.

The stock eng. is very rebuildable. They are lacking power, but get about 22mpg. E Bay is a good place for parts as well as this site.
The new eng. will last a long time.
Rust is the only issue I'd worry about with your LUV.
Where are you located?

welcome to the site and glad to hear we got another oregon luver. i just recently rebuilt my luv it had 286000 miles on it. i know because the guy i got it from said he watched it roll over twice. he used to drive it to montana every year. anyways they are very reliable. i don't have any experiance with the 4x4 parts though.

Your dad should love this, I only fill up my 1980 4x4 every two weeks, and drive to work and home. I use Conoco gas, and I get about 25 26 mpg. filled up a week ago this sunday and after driving back and forth to work and home, I've still got 3/4 of a tank of gas left. Beat that with anyone of the new fancy cars!

Your dad is right. They are always right :D
Most of us older folks did not think much of the "Jap" crap. If you looked at the luv- toyota and others of that time you need to compair them to other trucks of the same time. NO v8, or 6cyl, under powered, noisey, single side beds, thin sheet metal, Not for big guys, and on and on.

What he thinks is bad is what makes them disireable to us.
I had a 79 4x4 Luv, but someone wanted it more than I did. They stole it 4 days before Christmas in 1990. I am sure it ended up in Mexico or some ranch in west Texas. I would still would have had it.

Dad will get over it. The Luv engine is ok, you just remember what you have. It is not a V8. If it is real rusty I would fix what it needs to be a driver, and look for a good body, or whole truck to do your thing to.
What ever you do to the drive train will fit into another luv tuck

Welcome to the best Luv truck site.
Richard

Grandmaster of the "Shade Tree" way.. I can't see the yard for all the cars. Come on down and we will sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.

Welcome to the site and unfortunatly your dad is wrong but now matter

As far as all you Cali and Organ peeps go, well I have nothing to say :P

It seems that out of all the AZ ppl I'm the Lone Ranger, I've seen many come and go, and none seem to stick around

Prove your dad wrong. That is what I did. He has had a LUV since it was new on the showroom floor in 79, but he always told me that the LUV frame and chassis and suspension would never support a V-8, well I bought one that has a SBC in it and he fought me on it the entire time. Now I just burnout and shove it in his face

But to the same token give your ol' man some respect, he has been around the block, and when you truck does break, you will have him to help you, and to repeatedly say "I told you so" to you.

 Oh and by the way, I am a NOR CAL CALI poster

well I`m from az too still step in here every once in awhile haven`t raced or worked on the luv in that time. due to life work and deaths in the family hopefully thigs will be improved soon. I plan to start working on it soon. it looks like az is going to get a classic car exemption from emissions soon. according to the law that passed house senate and the gov signed cars and trucks 79 and older with collectable car insurance will be exempt from testing. so I am hoping to get on the road soon and not just the strip.
