So I need to shorten my column. Since I am running no interier it is just way to long. what would you all say is the best place to cut? I am not a fabricator. I was thinking underthe hood about half way up the shaft, cutting out a few inches then welding the rod back together.
I am still up in the air if I am going to run full hydraulic steering or just hydraulic assist. If I run full I will need to modify the column anyway.

well i would roll with your plan.Cut it at the shaft and i would put a sleeve on it.

If your go full hyd steer you are going to be building the whole column any way.

One thing to consider is that the column is designed to be collapsible so it doesn't impale you in an accident. When I crashed my 76 I was very happy that they did that, because I would have been a shish kibab otherwise. Granted, on a rig built for off highway use only it is less critical, though it should be a consideration. Rock crawlers can get pretty mangled up if things go wrong. Better to be safe than skewered.

The accordian section is in the upper part of the column, you may want to just start by taking one apart and seeing where you can lose length and not mess with that part of the shaft.

you need to look atthe whole steering column as the collapsable part is between the coulmn and the steering box. Sorry didn't want to offend any one.

if you cut it make sure you sleeve it and maybe drill some holes threw the sleeve and put plugs in it and weld all of it up good i just fixed a 4x4 scout that had snapped the collum in half and the guy drove right up some peoples front yard thank god no one was hurt so make sure you can weld good or better if you need some info please ask it is safer and safety is #1 i hope not to offend any one ether sorry if i do

i shortened the shaft on my buddies race truck near the middle and welded together with a collar. also cut and removed part of the sleave inside the cab for ease of large driver getting in and out
