One thing to consider is that the column is designed to be collapsible so it doesn't impale you in an accident. When I crashed my 76 I was very happy that they did that, because I would have been a shish kibab otherwise. Granted, on a rig built for off highway use only it is less critical, though it should be a consideration. Rock crawlers can get pretty mangled up if things go wrong. Better to be safe than skewered.
The accordian section is in the upper part of the column, you may want to just start by taking one apart and seeing where you can lose length and not mess with that part of the shaft.
