O.k, so this is my first Luv, 1979. I've had it for about six weeks, and here is the rundown:

Weber 32/36 DGV, no choke.
Electronic ignition from 84 Pup
Tach
Emissions removed.
Compression 150, 145, 145, 140
New cap/rotor
New wires plugs
Timing about 9 btdc. Static timed it first, then found my timing light and set it for 6 btdc. Then, held the throttle to 3000 rpm, and set the timing for 30 degrees with advance timing light. When I rechecked it at idle, it was about 9 btdc.
It seems like a strain to get it to 4000 rpm when I drive it.

I've got a little hill in the neighborhood, speed limit 25, 2nd gear type hill.
Seems to lose power the further up the hill I go.
Checked the plugs today, they were clean, and light tan to white. I thought I was too lean, so I opened the mixture screw on the weber another half turn. If I go open any more, it starts to die.

Followed the Weber set up exactly. When I first started, I had a 55 and 50 idle jets. I would have to open the mix screw about 3 1/2 turns to get the idle right. According to Weber, if you have to have it open more than a couple of turns, you need to jet up. So, I jetted up the primary idle from 55 to 60. Now, the idle will adjust exactly how the Weber setup says.

Comments? It just doesn't feel "peppy". No "zoom-zoom".

Sounds like you have done everything right, but still no power :? Are you sue you dont have brake issues, like maybe they are kinda hung up, or something? I am just kinda guessing here, cuz it seems like with all you have done, it ought to go pretty good. Anyway good luck!!!!!

what about fuel pressure the webers like 2.5/3 psi the luv pump does like 5/9 psi it may be getting a little to much fuel.... just a guess here.. im not an engine man but i am running the same here as you and it runs great and a lot faster then the other luv around town, just waiting to get the twins back on and dialed in then zoom zoom for sure

The brakes are all brand new, so I know there is no drag.

Catman, do recall what idle jets you run in the primary and secondary?

As far as fuel pressure, I've seen those specs before. I have one of those clear fuel filters in line, just before the carb. It seems to run about a third to half full. My thought was that if it was too much pressure, it might be all the way full.

Hell, maybe that's the problem, I don't have enough fuel flow. (what with the white plugs and all). Even if I open the mixture screw, maybe I don't have enough flow under load?

Guess I better check the pressure, double check the float level.

If you have any more thoughts, kick 'em my way. Thanks.

Next time you're under the hood, would you mind pulling them and looking at the little number on the flange? I'd like to compare, use yours as a baseline, seeings how yours is dialed in.

Mine was supposed to have come directly off a Luv.....but there's no telling what DPO did........

Remember, the idle mixture screw is just that--an idle mixture screw.

Everything else must be done with main jets.

It seems to run about a third to half full.

Remember there is a difference between pressure and volume.

Update:
I don't know where I went wrong, maybe it was trying to do three hands worth of stuff with only two hands.

I wanted to recheck total advance. (Somebody weigh in if this is wrong).
This time I got a helper to run the rpm up to 3000. Then, using an advance light, I brought the mark to zero. Then, I looked at the knob on the timing light, and it was 55 degrees. Jeez. That can't be right, can it?
Anyway, I retarded the timing to get total timing at 3000 of 35 degrees.

Also, double checked the float setting and travel....it was not correct, but it is now.

It runs a little better, but I don't know which adjustment might have had more impact.

It's not perfect yet, I'm still thinking I have a fuel delivery issue, maybe the flow can't keep up with the demand once I hit the 3000-3500 rpm mark. It just seems to flatten out.

Oh, well, back out to the truck. I'll check back later, see if there are any more pearls of wisdom. Thanks.

Also from what you’re saying about falling flat.... here is what the carb book said.... (Popping threw carb uneven idle and bogging during acceleration can often be traced to fuel starvation) and like the guy said fuel psi and flow are 2 different thing make sure your psi is 2 1/2 to 3 psi and that your jets are flowing an even stream of fuel. remember idling the truck and reading the spark plugs for proper fuel/air will give a false reading ... the book said check at full horse power and then shut down cleanly don’t let it idle down then check the plugs , you want a nice tan or light brown
for some reason not all the post was posted so here is the rest
Ok mine are 140 main in the fuel bowl and 170 primary air corrector and 160 secondary air corrector.

Another update: Found a power band, and it felt good. I was in 2nd, maybe about 3200 rpm, and I went to WOT. Very nice pull, shift into 3rd, zoom zoom.

Still a little flat on the bottom end. Catman, did you read your idle jets yet?

Thanks, catman, I didn't see that first time around. Your primary jet is bigger than mine.

I put a pressure regulator on, followed by a pressure gauge. I haven't taken it for a road test yet, but here's the weird thing. I can barely get a reading on the guage.

Now, I'll have to verify if that gauge is good or bad.

Like a monkey doing a football, a lot of effort, not a lot of payoff :x

Ha-ha, took this thing for a drive with the regulator set at 2 1/2....fell flat on it's face, didn't make it 30 yards.........just long enough for the float bowl to get sucked dry!!

If I wasn't having so much fun, might consider self flagellation. Oh wait, that would be less painful.

it sounds like you might need a new fuel pump. if you do, get the universal one rate it at 4 to 9 psi. it is like $15, if i remember right. it looks identical to the luv fuel pump rated at 6psi (i think), but like $10 more than the universal one. i just bought a new fuel pump for mine cause it was getting week and only putting out 2 psi. the universal one i put in was pumping 7 psi and i have my regulator set at 2.5 psi and the carb runs great. remember these are low pressure high volume.
