ok my latest question is about this little plastic plate thingy between the carb and intake manifold. one of the holes is about a third blocked off. why and do i need it to stay that way? and do i even need this plate at all?
i'm just trying to get rid of crap i don't need. i already pulled the egr junk. and i managed to fill the egr hole inside the intake manifold quite smoothly with some ol jb weld. it almost looks like it was made that way. without the egr valve it makes it alot easier to get to the manifold bolts too.

That plastic deal is an insulator to help keep the carb from getting hot and causing vapor lock. So yes, it is useful. I've seen two types, one with just plain holes in it with no restriction, and one with a sort of drop in cylinder of sheetmetal that makes the air go deeper into the intake before turning toward the cylinders. You could take that metal part out, but I figure it probably does something to modify airflow across the secondary barrel of the carb. I imagine they found some of the air from the primary backing up the secondary a bit and tried to get the primary airstream deeper in the intake or something like that. I've never noticed a difference running with or without it though, one way or another.

Yours sounds like it might be a little different. Hard to say just why they would block airflow, so it probably had some theoretical purpose. If it is as bad as it sounds, I would probably replace the plastic part with one of the older plain hole style. The plastic insulator is helpful in keeping the carb from boiling off fuel, but restrictions to air flow are seldom helpful.

My 78 has an insulator with open holes and my 80 insulator has the 1/3 of one hole closed off like you said fuferman. I don't know why it's there.
If you are going to try stuff, I would keep the insulator just maybe open it up. Like 800xl said before, the insulator should be used to avoid vapor lock and stuff.

I like to think of it as a 1.8 tunnel ram.

well i opened it up i'm sure i won't notice the difference other than the power of suggestion. put together with covering up my egr port it should flow a little better. oh mine's an 80 also so that must be something they did that year.

Mine's a '79, and it had the plastic insulator with the smaller port partially blocked off. What I noticed is that the little block part has a beveled edge to it........hmm, why a beveled edge, instead of a straight edge?

I tried to zen thru it........but you all know the end result.

Weber. :D
