Depends where the slop originates. The steering gear box at the bottom of the steering column is adjustable with a big slotted screw with a locknut around it. If the tierod ends or ball joints are worn, then a replacement is called for.

The easiest way to find where your slop comes from is to have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch things under the truck. Get them to turn it just far enough back and forth to make the tires move just a smidge, then look at the whole steering system starting at the box. Look for something that is moving a bunch before the tires even begin to wiggle.

I put my hand on the different joints to feel for slop while my son rocked the wheel. On mine I found a sloppy idler arm.

I remember reading that they are not available any more. Am I screwed? I want a new one if possible rather than used.

Ron, it depends on what is bad on your idler arm. Rock auto has a idler arm bushing kit for 20 bucks or so.
