Does any one know the size tanks they put in 1981 luv trucks?
My fuel gauge doen't work all the time. It is on an 1981 4x4 diesel, with the short bed.

The gauge works when you fill the truck up, as I am driving it moves to the E position and will slowly move up again. However it does this a large lenths of time. It doen't seem to be effected by bums in the road, it just decides to move down to E.

Thanks

You most likely have a bad / dirty electrical connection at the fuel tank. I cleaned mine up and the problem went away. I need to clean it again because it wont show a completely full tank as it should.

I had an 83 Isuzu Pup for a while and it seemed to have about the same size tank as my older (77,79) LUVs which at 12 gallon. However, I never drained it dry and filled it up while I had it, so it is hard to tell. The most I recall putting in it was about 11.8 gallon tho.

It sounds like you have a bad sending unit on the tank. It is not easy to get out, but only that it takes some work not that it is really complicated.

Ditto to what Blue Meanie said. I had the same problem and just had to clean and tighten up the connections at the tank. Has worked fine ever since. Knock on wood!

That is a good point. The sending unit works basically as a variable resistor I believe. Any bad connections or flaky wiring would raise resistance and throw off the gauge reading. Plus it has the benefit of being something you can do without pulling the tank out of the truck, pulling the sending unit, etc. Even if it turns out the unit is bad, it would be better to know that more conclusively before you have to tear into it.
