ok i lined up the timing chain just by a guess. and it works pretty good. well it runs that's what's important. but now it's totally gutless. i'm not sure if it might be off a tooth or if my vacuum advance isn't working right.. i've tried to move it a tooth in each direction.. if someone could let me know what to line the top sprocket up with when #1 is at tdc that would really help.

oh and i found an 82 distributor with electronic ignition just sittin in my spare parts from back when i didn't know what i had. i'll put that in once i get it working properly with the points.

I'll go look it up in the book and tell you what has to be lined up for cam timing.

Line up the crank at TDC, the cam with the mark on the camshaft straight up. The cam mark is on the shaft behind the sprocket on the shaft, I think on the thrust flange(wider bit that runs in a groove on the head), and I believe it lines up with the pin that holds the sprocket in place. There should be a little bit of a mark of the head to line it up with.

You can also take out the distributor and look down the hole to make sure the slot is offset the right direction, but basically the above should put #4 in firing position.

I'm kind of rusty on this stuff right now and in a hurry for work, maybe I'll revisit this tonight and see if I can't get you more definite info. Also search for an old post I did about a year ago that talks about doing this. I know I went into obscene detail on cam/crank/distributor alignment when I posted about finally getting my 80 running.

thanks 800xl that's what i needed. the cam mark. i'll try that tomorrow before i go to work. now another quick question. i'm sure i don't have the chain lined up right right now so that problem will be fixed but my oil pump/distributor drive gear i don't think is lined up right with the crank. as long as i put the spark plug wires on accordingly to make up for the difference i shouldn't have a problem... right?

Right. If it helps , the #1 is kinda out towards the radiator.
