Well first, email carfax and complain. Tell them you are looking to buy a classic vehicle and their site needs to support that rather lucrative market. If enough of us complain they might just add support for older VINs.
I think there are other ways to do a VIN search. I know if you were a police officer you could certainly do it, so I don't see how the Nevada DMV could not do a national VIN search and get you in touch with the last registered owner. You could also look into a salvage title, or reconstructed. There are some options there that might let you title it without having to figure out who owns it. A lien sale sort of thing could work as well, try calling the DMV and asking how to get title to a vehicle abandoned on your property so you can sell it.
You might also call your local police department and see what they can tell you as far as doing a search on the VIN. They might just help you out if you talk nice.
