i am guessing a custom driveshaft. But there arent many 700 r4's in use with the v8 swap, they seem to be kind weak. i am sure they can be built to withstand lots of power, but the favorite is the ol' 350/350

Ben has ran 700's but after smoking a few he went with a 350 or 400

longevity for my first 87 1/2 ton 700-4 was 275k miles. It just quit and gave up the ghost with only fluid changes and filter changes. The new crate one from Chevy has only 125k and on cold days(around 32+/-) it can't make up it's mind what gear it wants to be in whether going uphill or down. So I got lucky with the first one. Don't even go to Colorado in the winter anymore, can't trust it. I hope this is a fluke.

:smt115 :smt100 Look for a 4l60 out of 90-95 pickup/vans they are a stronger version of the 700r4,use a TCI kit witch doubles the clutchs in the over drive pack. And you have got to make sure that the TVS cable is adjusted right.

I was under the impression that 4L60s are the same thing as the 700R4s, and 4L60Es are what you want if you want something more stout. But then you need to run a computer...

yeah thats my basic understnading of things. I was under the impression though that major improvements were not made untill the tranny (4l60/700r4) went electronic.

The 700r4s in 90 up had some internal parts upgraded for heaver use in pickups and vans so it was called a 4l60 instead of a 700r4 upgrade. In 95-96 GM then made it an electronic 4l60e. You can buy these trans in like new condition from GM, a good place is Sallee Chevrolet in MiltonFreewater Ore.as well as about any engine or speed goody for Chevys there are. Get on there web site you can't go wrong as there pricing is hard to beat.

Sallee is good for a new one. Remember if up grading a old one things can get expensive real quick. I had one break a rear planet shaft and tore it down. Looked like new at 103,000. Bought the upgaded 5 gear front and rear planet sets .05 pressure solinoid, beast heavy duty sun shell & out put shaft, 10 vain pump, new converter, corvette billit servo, all new soft parts and fluid and had $1500 in parts. Bowtie overdrives is anouther good site to check out.

a nice advantage besides the .67 OD gear is the 3.06:1 first gear. that makes for a nice launch.

put a stout shift kit in it, toss the wavy plates in the trash and use additional fiber and metal to replace them. use a HD or Corvette Servo, a 10 vein pump is a necessity (early had 7 vein). kevlar (red) band, kevlar plates, etc. i believe u would have to redrill ur trans adapter plate and shorten the driveshaft as the 4L60 (E) is 2" longer than a TH350. a disadvantage is that you cant really go super loose on the converter without sacraficing the trans a little. I wouldnt go any looser than 3600 stall.

A lot of racers use a 200R4 out of a grand national and beef them up with all aftermarket internals. they are supposedly stronger than a TH 400 but less parasitic (TH 400 will lose you about .2 sec in the quarter mile due to heavy rotating mass)
