So, I have developed yet another prob. with the luv  When I turn the steering wheel, it feels like its bumpy, or like its on gears and not happy about it! Any of you guys had this problem? I'm guessing its time for a new steering box

You got it right. new box is needed. Have had to change mine twice, but I have had it for 22 years.

Thanks guys!!! I think it might have something to do with my header on that side touching the steering shaft. I think it has gotten to warm, and maybe screwed something up inside the box!

What year is your LUV? I have a early box if you need one.

It probably would. I cant think of anything else that would cause it to do what its doing.

well if the shaft is touching the header wouldnt that be the problem right there? i dont remember if the shaft is round or round with 2 flat sides or not. i dont know. prolly is the box...

on your year thing if you look at the vin number plate in your drivers side door you count to the 8th number over and that is the year

It just started doing this the other day, so its just not the fact its touching, as I think it has heated up something in the box, and now it has given out! And Budbondo, I will look at that tomarrow!!! THANKS!!!

Luvnit, 800xl was telling me about a powering steering upgrade from a trooper. That might be an option as well.

It has been a while since I read all the info on the power steering swap. I think someone did it on a 2WD using a Trooper gearbox, swapping the pitman arm from the LUV onto the Troop's box, but I'm not certain. I need to get a dedicated parts troop (can't pull parts off my daily driver :P ) and yank all that stuff off and check it out someday. I'm planning to go power steering on my 79 4x4 when I get around to building it up, so eventually I'll be able to say for sure.

Im looking at doing the Trooper power box thing.

Im looking at swapping to the later drag link at the same time. I figure i might as well have a go at swapping to the later linkages etc when i put the ventilated discs on the front.

Ive got a whole 83 KBD21 (or KBD24 cant remember) model to pinch the steering bits off along with an 84 Trooper box and later model Pickup pump, hoses and resivouir off a 2.6L.
If the G161Z stays in there for now i can get my hands on an Impulse pump or chase up a Trooper one, both come off G200Z's. The current thought is to fit in a 2.3L 4ZD1 motor.

Im tipping it all should be a bolt on fit, the mounting points on the chassis rails are the same bolt spacings. The steering shaft will need to be modified as the power box is higher/taller and has a uni that goes on it tinstead of the disc.

Im also looking at swapping the castor rods over and doing something about a better sway bar.
Ive got all new balljoints to fit and i was thinking about spacing the bottom on off the lower arm by an inch to drop the front a bit without sagging the torsion bars. Doing that also dials in a bit more - camber.

If i get the 7" rims on the front that i want to squeeze in there i rekon i will need the power hook.

Cheers. Bob.
