What would it take to make a regular TH400 transmission have a reverse gear pattern - (P-R-N-1-2-3 as opposed to P-R-N-3-2-1) and also make it fully manual like the ones in the summit catalog?

You have to get an aftermarket reverse pattern fully manual valve body. I believe that's the only way.

To go to a reverse I think you do have to buy a valve body but I have done fully manual with a stock valve body. With the shifters available today the need for a reverse pattern is gone. I will look at some of my stuff and get back to you but I know Transgo stage 3 shift kit can get you the manual part. If you put it in 3 you are in 3rd taking off it is fully manual. The advantage of reverse pattern was so you could not hit neutral and most shifter eliminate the need.

Yeah... but something about pulling it down rather that pulling it up really appeals to me.

I guess that might do it... Not bad.

I got my motor and trans. I ended up passing on the crate 383, the 350 was a bit cheaper. I'll probably stroke this one anyway. The motor needs to be rebuilt, and probably bored out, so I may as well put the 400 crank in it while its apart.

Got a 400 transmission, and really wanted a fully manual for a little more control. I'm one of the control freak types, not a wife beater or anything, but I want it to shift when I want to, not 7 or 8 seconds later, but I don't really want to screw with putting a real manual trans in.

Well, guys, I'm that much closer. I need a fuel cell, and a narrowed rear end, and I'll have all the major stuff. And I guess a radiator wouldn't hurt.

Of course, it should go without saying that I'll be putting a fat cam in it, as well as God know what other mods. I prolley have at least a year before I'll be even moderately satisfied with it, because we all know that you're never really finished.

Just a little added info, Most 400's in factory form will shift into 2nd even with the shifter in low. This happens around 5200 rpm and can be changed by grinding the govener weights. Grind a little at a time until you reach the desired shift point. If you change a valve (supplied with most shift kits) or you can grind 2 flat spots and plug one hole and it will stay in low until the shifter is moved to 2nd. I ended up changing mine to stay in low because it was just coming alive and it would shift. There is a real good book on the 400 and I will get the title and author and post it. I know about where it is in the garage also I will look at the instruction on the stage 3 kit and see if reverse pattern was a option. Thinking about a transbrake for mine!

LOL one year if your lucky! Or rich. Dang, im half way through year four and still have things to do. id be bummed of I was done though.

Had a buddy install a manual VB in a mopar. Nice option. I love the idea of a stick only minus the stupid clutch. Who wants to push that down all their life. that maunual VB is the answer.

thats just me though, I know there are guys who love sticks, and thats totally cool with me
