Has anybody ever put a wood floor in a step-side. The floor of my step-side is rusted and I thought about puttig a wood floor in it like the older Chevys had. I just wonder if it would be more trouble than it would be worth.

My stepfather and I make custom wood floors for trucks ( along with other items ) We have done chevy's, Dodge's and a Ford bed. If you do it right and finish it right it looks really nice. Good luck to ya.

I thought that I would do it with cedar and put a clear finish on it to seal it and make it look good.

Cedar is a good wood to use as long as the truck is the right color, it will look really nice.

As long as it is used for show cedar will work fine, as long as it is well taken care of.

I plan on painting the truck the brightest red that I can find. It is going to be a driver, but not a hauler. I already warned my wife that once it is done, if it won't fit in her mini van, don't buy it!

What kind of wood is that in that Dodge? That looks good. Might be a better idea than cedar.

That is oak, it is all in the way it is finished. That wood is 8 years old and it tied for first place ( Best bed wood ) with a brand new set we made for someone else. Take your time and be Anal about how it looks, keep it clean and dry and it will last.

Where can I get the chrome strips? If I do the wood in my bed, I would have to go all the way with the strips and all.

Now there's the problem, I doubt you will be able to find strips to fit a Luv, you will probably have to buy them for a 1/2 ton short bed, or even a '50s model Chevy truck and cut them to fit.

Try these guys

Good Luck, and let me know if you need anything else.

Great Idea!!! However, the one thing that nobody has mentioned is what to use on the wood bed to preserve it. I'm not exactly sure, but I would use a very good marine finish. It would be water proof and sealed better if you did. I just got a 76 Luv and the floor of the bed is rusted thru in a couple of spots and that was the first thing I thought of, thanks for all the tips. May just do it for a slightly custom look.

We usually don't finish the wood that we sell due to the labor involved. We applied 13 coats of our special ( secret ) formula to each board, then had to resand 5 boards back to bare because we wern't happy with our results. We are currently drying some Quater Sawn oak to redo our bed and then we will sell our old wood.

Our truck rarely sees rain and when it does we hand dry the entire truck as soon as its done.

The better you care for the wood, the better it will look and longer it will last.
